I'm always looking for an extra buck here and there, and I know in this day and age of inflation you probably are too. Here's a few apps that I use to make and earn some extra cash! If the app tells me how much I've earned using it, I'll be sure to mention it below.

Evidation

This is a cool app that you connect to your fitness apps, and you get points per activity. Basically points for being healthy! The best part is, it's passive. But, you can earn extra points here and there by answering questions. At 10,000 points you can cash out! I find it's really easy to get to 10,000 points. You can use my link to sign up and you get some bonus points to start off with.

Fetch Rewards

Fetch Rewards gives you points for scanning receipts. Any receipt. You get points based off your purchases, and then you can trade points for gift cards. Most of the time I cash out for Amazon gift cards!
I also have a referral code for Fetch! Use code: DCHUC when you sign up and you'll start off with 100 points.  Digital receipts count too! You can link it to your Amazon account and get points for those purchases too.

Ibotta

Ibotta is something I don't use as much as I used to, but it still earns me money here and there! You scan you receipts and you can get rebates for certain groceries at specific stores.  My referral code is: RXVOPCH, and if you use that when you sign up you'll get $10.

Rakuten

I'm shocked, but Rakuten just told me I have gotten well over $700 in cash back since I started using it. Just wild! It's free money! They have an app, but I also use the browser extension when shopping online.
You can use this link to sign up and get $30.

Mercari and Poshmark

I use both apps to sell used clothing and some household items! I actually wrote an extensive post on the differences between the 2 apps here. I think my favorite is Mercari! Most of the time, I'll sell and item and keep my balance in the app and use it to buy something new for myself. According to Mercari I have just over $700 in revenue and just under $500 with Poshmark. Poshmark is also offering $10 to shop with if you use my code to sign up: keswoolsey

Google Opinion Rewards

This is Google's survey app. Every once in awhile I'll get a notification that they have a question for me. It's usually 2-3 questions about random things. You get a few cents for each question answered. So, while you aren't getting actual cash out, they do give you Google play store money. I personally save it up for a while and buy an audiobook or ebook that my library doesn't have. In total I have earned $280 with this app.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments below! Do you use any of these apps, or are some of them new to you?

Phone Apps I Use To Make Money

Monday, March 27, 2023

A "fun" challenge for you. Go through your bank statement and write down just how much you are spending on subscription services. They add up so quickly. Especially when most of them seem so cheap or insignificant. The reality is most, if not all, of these services are luxuries and not necessary! I know I like to try new subscription boxes all the time, and often share about them here on the blog! But, I want you to know that you are the gatekeeper of your home and wallet! So, never feel pressured to sign up for anything, just because I make it seem like something you might want.

Here's where we've landed on subscriptions. I'm not including things like Microsoft 365 - this is solely boxes or other services we don't use for work, etc.

Saving Money Tips: Cutting Subscriptions

Subscriptions We Are Keeping

Disney + = $11/month

Disney + is the only streaming service we pay for. Obviously, we love all the nostalgic Disney movies, but we really love all of the new shows. Specifically the Star Wars shows! Both of us totally agree we are keeping this monthly subscription.

Peloton App = $12.99/month

We absolutely love the Peloton work outs. We first signed up for it when we got our exercise bike. I have a phone mount on the bike and easily adapt the Peloton rides to a non-Pelton bike. But, we actually fell in love with the other classes they offer! We use it far more for strength and barre classes than the rides at this point. We share an account and I think this is totally worth the price. Especially since we don't have a gym membership and all the basic equipment at home.

Spotify Family = $15.99/month

I specifically signed up for Spotify on a beach trip a few summers ago. It's just so nice to have commercial free music. Now, I use it for podcasts as well as running playlists. We upgraded to the family plan to share with my sister and her husband. They use it just as much as we do, otherwise I'd go down to the 2 person $13.99 plan.

Plan To Eat = $40/year

**I have this post written and scheduled in advance, so since I typed this out Plan To Eat sent out an email that their prices are rising this year!

I recently shared a meal planning post where I sang the praises of Plan To Eat! I love this service. I use it to store all of my recipes, make meal plans, and generate shopping lists. It's invaluable. Especially if I'm busy, Blake can easily pull up the app and see what we have planned for dinner and get started cooking. They always do a big Black Friday sale on their yearly membership and I plan to renew it then to get my year for half price. (I have a free trial for Plan To Eat if you'd like to try it for yourself!)

Athena Club = $13/ My Order

This is a razor subscription service. I love my razor so much! I skip it all the time because my blades last forever. I may have 8 refills under my sink as we speak, so even though I'm 'keeping' this subscription going, I won't have to make an order for quite awhile. This is by far the cheapest way to get razor blades. Unless you are like Blake and get an old fashioned safety razor, in which the blades are pennies.

Subscriptions On The Chopping Block

Butcher Box = $169/Box

This subscription is brand new! I have to say, I really like getting this box. The meat quality is so so good, and gosh is it convenient. It's not a necessity though, which is why it's on the chopping block. However, I can push out the deliveries forever if I want so that's what I'm doing for now, and maybe make an order once in awhile. (I have a $30 coupon for you if you want to try it!)

Grove Collaborative = Varies/Month  VIP=$19.99/Year

If you are shocked to see this on the chopping block, you aren't alone. I LOVE Grove, and often post about my monthly orders. Here's the deal, I'm conflicted. I signed up for this when we lived in a small town and getting certain brands there was very difficult. I had to wait until I went to a bigger city to make a Target run to stock up on the things I liked. So to get it in the mail each month was awesome. Plus, the Grove brand products are fabulous. As a VIP member I get so many free gifts monthly and yearly. But, now I can get most of these items along with my groceries locally. My Grove orders are usually pretty big, so it's one of those things I think I could break up throughout the month instead of one big order. I dunno! I can skip these orders any time, so my thought is to maybe make them quarterly for the Grove specific items? Like, I said it's on the chopping block, but I can't decide yet.
(If you are new to Grove, you can use my link for a free gift set)

**I actually wrote a post in 2017 about what we were subscribed to, which was funny to read back. We are not subscribed to a single thing there anymore. Except! That was the first time I wrote about Grove! I had just signed up. **

Legal Shield = $30/Month

This is a service that's one of those nice to have things. In fact, we just used it battling Comcast. That's a whole story, but they were hassling us over a big charge from our move that we were not responsible for. We went around and around with them for a year over it. Legal Shield helped us get it resolved swiftly and everything was made right. It's great what a strongly worded letter from a lawyer can do. So, honestly this has paid for itself! They also helped us get our Wills done. It's honestly a great service. But, it's also not totally necessary, so we are debating on keeping it.

Walmart + = $98/Year

Walmart + is kinda like Amazon Prime. It gives you free shipping and a few other perks like Paramount+ and  discounts on gas at their stations. We got it for the free grocery delivery. It's more than paid for itself and we've only had it for half a year. But, I can also do grocery car pick up for free, so it's one of those things we don't' really need. It's free delivery sure, but then you have to tip the driver. And our deliveries end up at our neighbors house half the time and we have to 'deliver' them to ourselves, haha. ($20 towards Walmart+ delivery if you want to give it a go!)

Duolingo = $84.99/Year

Ugh, I still fee guilty about signing up for this. I'm on a close to 400 day streak on Duolingo! I use it every day and the free version got on my nerves after awhile. This renews in the fall, so I'm going to full enjoy it until then, but I'm seriously thinking about just doing the free version after that.

Car Wash = $19.99/Month

I'm sure you are looking at this thinking this is an obvious one that seems *extra*. And it is! But, it's so nice. This is the car wash with the free vacuums. They totally swindled me into signing up, but since the wash I was going to buy that day was already $20, I figured I might as well get the rest of the month free. But, I know I'm never going to be able to track down a worker to cancel this. Just kidding, I know I can cancel obviously, but it's one of those that I have to go out of my way to do. Plus, it's so nice to have!

Book of the Month = $16.99/Month

Book of the Month is such a treat if you are book lover. I can skip orders at any time, so I feel like that's what I'm going to do for the time being. I love getting these books, but it's an unnecessary expense. I love the library and save literal thousands a year using it! For now, I'm just going to push out my deliveries and see if I can ask for a gift card to keep up this treat. (It's def worth getting that first book for $5!)

Subscriptions We Are Canceling

Gobble = $90/3 Meals a Week

Ah, this was a sad day. Gobble is by far my favorite of the meal kit boxes. The dishes are so good and all of them are very quick and mostly one pan meals. For one thing, I was tired of monitoring my account to make sure I didn't get an accidental delivery. With food prices rising, I just knew I'd do better budgeting meal planning and trying to maximize meals per ingredient. That said, totally love Gobble and I might be back one day. Sometimes it's just nice not to worry about dinner.

Kindle Unlimited = $9.99/Month

I signed up for this on a promo. It was $4.99 for 3 months. And, I absolutely used it! But, the book selection is just okay, and I did not feel that it was worth $10 a month. Especially with how often I get library books and audiobooks. If they do a promo again in the future I might sign up for a month or two and read a bunch and cancel again.

Zoom = $15/Month

We used the pro Zoom account all the time during the pandemic. But, now the free version will do just fine and I'm happy to keep my $15 a month.

Revive Essential Oil Seasonal Boxes = $55/Quarter

Love Revive! You may have noticed I haven't shared one of their seasonal boxes in a while. That's because I canceled it! It was fun, but not needed. Some of the oils I got in the seasonal boxes were fantastic, but most of them were just okay. I was finding that ILOVED just one oil in each box, and then the others went in the drawer, or I would use them in cleaning products or something just to use them up. I still make orders from time to time but I'm only ordering my favorites.

Couch to 10K App = $5.99/3 months

10 out of 10 to the C25K App! I love it and it got me back in running shape. And it's free! But, to use the 10k version you have to subscribe. It's still great and useful. But, when I'm done with my half marathon in April I will be canceling this app.

Florida State Park Pass = $120/Year

It's a personal goal of mine to visit every single State Park here in Florida at some point. We've done many!! For the past 2 years we have purchased the annual family pass that gets your whole group in for "free" to each State Park. We definitely visit several parks a year, but the price of this went up and we both agree it's not worth it for us to renew. We will just pay al a carte as we go in the future.

Local Beer Society = $50/Year

Blake and I love going to breweries! We have a local group of beer lovers that created a membership to get a special discount or freebie at all the various local breweries in our area. It was a really cool thing. And, honestly we shared it with my parents! So it probably did pay for itself with all the random discounts over the year. But, this just falls into the unnecessary category. My dad can't even drink beer unless it's gluten free now, so it's definitely not going to get used like it was.

To make a long post longer, haha, I just wanted to summarize all of this by encouraging you just to list out your subscriptions and see where your money is going. These all truly add up, and it's a great thing to reevaluate more frequently!

Culling Our Subscription Services

Friday, February 24, 2023

Currently, I'm reading book number 70 for the year! I can hardly believe it. Especially because I barely made it to 40 books in 2020. If I keep this up, I may be on track for 100 books this year. 😲 If I were to have purchased every single book I've read in 2021 at full price, I think it's safe to say I would have spent over $700 on reading material. And, that's crazy.

Mercair Versus Poshmark | Which resale platform is better? | www.kristenwoolsey.com

If you've been reading for any length of time, you know I have a passion for shopping used. I love the thrill of finding the perfect item for a fraction of the cost as new! Almost as much as I love that feeling, I also love making money from things we aren't using. Ebay has been really successful for me over the years, but I've also ventured into other apps/websites.

I mainly used Poshmark, but in the last few months Mercari also popped up on my radar. I was used to using Poshmark, and didn't really think that one app was better than the other. Then again, I wasn't really having huge success with Poshmark, so I decided to give Mercari a go. Spoiler alert-Mercari is now my preference. Let's talk about the differences and why I have a new favorite. (But, also why you might like Poshmark better!)

Mercari V. Poshmark | Which resale app is the best?!

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

Admittedly, my husband Blake has been handling our budget and bills for the majority of our marriage. It kind of started out that way because I moved into his home and I had almost zero bills to add to the pile. (Live at home as long as you can kids!) Recently, though, I've involved myself. For multiple reasons really, but mainly because I realized that I'm in a position to help take some things off of his plate and I create half the expenses-so I should be a little more proactive in our finances.

We've got some big goals coming up! For example, our ten year wedding anniversary is in the beginning of 2020 and I'd really like to take a big trip, possibly overseas. And a few house projects are always on the list too.

Maintaining a budget is incredibly challenging, and actually a little complicated. It seems like there are always things coming up, like repairs or parties that take a chunk out of your extra cash. Although our budget is still a work in progress, I thought I'd share a few things we have been doing to save a little extra lately.

Meal Planning
As much as I love to cook, eating out is still a huge set back in our monthly budget. While it's inevitable that sometimes we will need to grab lunch out or won't have time to make dinner, we've ramped up our meal planning! I shared a few tips for meal planning a few months ago, but I have been experimenting with a new system.

Sometimes it's really hard to be creative when it comes to picking out meals for the week! We decided to make a huge list of our favorite meals and create a meal plan for 30 days. It was very easy to name 20 meals that we knew and loved, and then it took a little brainstorming to come up with additional meals. We divided up that list into 4 weeks and made sure we weren't having the same genre of food multiple nights per week. I plan on leftovers at least one night, which also gives us some flexibility if we want to do a date night or go out with friends. To make it even easier on us, we made up grocery lists for each week. This has been such a huge stress reliever and there are no "what's for dinner?" questions.

10 Easy Ways to SAVE MONEY // Pugs & Pearls Blog

Shopping at Walmart
Gah, I have a love/hate relationship with Walmart. Their prices are so much better than Publix. For example, a can of black beans at our Publix is something like 89 cents, but at walmart it's 50 cents. Obviously, a difference of 30 cents isn't going to move mountains, but that savings across the board has saved us quite a bit of money over time.

I've learned to go late at night, or early on Sunday mornings and not a soul is in there. It's really the people that normally lurk in Walmarts that drive me crazy, so if I can go at a slower time, I'm happy!

Overall, I've tried to just be more diligent at the grocery store. Sticking to my list, paying attention to sales, and not buying single serve items has helped me shave $30-40 off each grocery trip for the past month.

*I also found that Brandless was a really great way to shop for grocery basics! I shared what we ordered from them recently, and we found that most everything was really great quality and only $3!

Ibotta
I started using Ibotta last year, I think, and I would save a dollar here and there. I started seriously using it a few months ago and I have noticed a huge increase in my cash back! Ibotta is an app that allows you to find rebates on things you are already buying. You just select your store, and unlock offers that that store carries. When you shop, you upload a copy of your receipt and get cash back on those items. You can cash out at $20. Using Ibotta at Walmart is SO easy! All you have to do is scan the QR code at the bottom of your receipt. It's painless!

You can also get a certain percent cash back on several online stores. If I buy anything through Groupon or Poshmark, I always shop with Ibotta and get a little bit back from those purchases. My mom even let me scan her World Market receipt when she stocked up on wine, and at the time they were offering 4% cash back on any in-store purchase. Thanks momma!

Ebates
Ebates has been around for years, but I only signed up recently. I don't know why, because it's SO useful! I installed the chrome extension, and Ebates lets me know when there is a cash back rebate on any website. I've ordered a few things recently from Etsy, Ebags and Hobby Lobby and there were rebates for those sites. EASY MONEY! This was stuff I was already going to buy, so it's really nice to get rewarded for things like that.

From what I understand, they send out a check each quarter with all of your rebates. I've already gotten a check!

Unsubscribing From Emails
I sort of started this last year, mainly to get rid of clutter in my inbox. One side effect of that being I am not being tempted with sales for my favorite stores! If I was notified everytime J Crew Factory was having a sale I would literally be broke. Instead, I only shop when I need something, and if they are having a sale, great.

Sort of along these lines, I'm not clicking on other blogger's posts regarding sales or wishlists. I find it too tempting to look at and all too easy to click over to store's websites.

Not Buying A New Car
This has been truly challenging! Blake and I both currently own both of our vehicles. Blake has had his Civic since 2005. It's still in immaculate condition, just a little older. As much as he would love a new car, we are really trying to be content with what we have. He drives his car to work and back, and we use my CRV for everything else. It's really saving us a large monthly bill by sticking with what we have. Contentment is not commonplace and we are really going against the grain.

Making Reusable Swaps
One day, I'd love to say that we are a 'Zero Waste' family. It's been really bothering me lately with how 'throw away' our culture has become. Not only does it make me feel good to produce less waste, but swapping items out for their reusable counterparts has saved us money. For example, I no longer use ziplock bags. We swapped them for these reusable bags from Grove. Instead of dryer sheets, I use these wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oils (See photo below). I also traded out our swiffer mop pads and dusting pads for these microfiber ones on Etsy. (Please note that those are 100% made in China and not a homemade item. They are great though.) Using my water bottles, insulated cups and reusable straws as often as possible helps me avoid buying drinks when I'm out and about.

Acknowledging My Purchases
I've got a nifty little budget recording dashboard for the back of my planner, and it has forced me to acknowledge what I'm spending money on. It's easy to say you are only going to spend $100 on eating out in a month-but to see what it actually totals up to has kept me on track. It's also satisfying to see those totals decreasing month to month as I try to make changes.

10 Easy Ways to SAVE MONEY // Pugs & Pearls Blog

Diligent Coupon Searching
Finding a coupon is sort of an obvious way to save money, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. It's always good to do a quick search for a coupon. You never know what's available! Last week, when I went into Michael's, I quickly checked their website and found a 40% off coupon that my purchase qualified for. One other suggestion: Etsy sellers almost always have an Instagram account for their shop and more times than not they include a coupon code in their bio. It takes just a minute, but it can save you a couple of bucks!

Revisiting DIY Cleaners
One thing I've realized as I've compiled this list, is that most of these strategies are things I used to do, but just slipped out of the habit of. Making my own DIY cleaners is one of those things. At one point, all of my household cleaners were homemade (except for Clorox). Whether it was boredom or something else, I started buying a few cleaners again. In an effort to simplify and tighten my budget, I've revisited my DIY cleaners. One thing became very evident-I don't even need that many cleaners to begin with! A lot of jobs can be done with the same cleaners and the ingredients cost pennies.

10 Easy Ways to SAVE MONEY // Pugs & Pearls Blog

I've got a brand new recipe for an all-purpose Thieves cleaner which I am currently testing. Spoiler alert: I really love it already! I plan to dedicate an entire post to that recipe soon. I'm hoping to diminish my cleaning supply stash and not replace those items. Additionally, once I run out of my laundry detergent, I will be doing a DIY batch again. Last time I made our own laundry detergent it lasted well over a year!

Bonus: Do Things Yourself
Obviously, sometimes you need professional help. And then there are other times you can get away with doing things yourself. Whether that's home repairs, yard work, or chores around the house. I can think of two big examples that we've employed this strategy.

One is with my blog! There are beautiful, custom and expensive blog designs out there. Trust me, there have been many times when I've been tempted to hire out a redesign of my blog since I started in 2014! Instead I've tried to keep it simple with using a free platform, and choosing a highly customizable template from Etsy. Canva has been a huge resource for me in designing graphics and my logo. If something doesn't look quite right or I want to do further customization usually a quick search or Youtube video can help me figure it out on my own.

Another example, is grooming my pugs! Bathing three dogs is probably the last thing I feel like doing, but it's too easy not to do it myself. When we only had Delly, we would take her in to get her nails trimmed each month. It cost about $15 to do it at our vet. Now that we have 3 dogs, we started trimming their nails ourselves, saving $45 a month. We use these clippers. Trimming their nails is an olympic event, but saving that money is definitely worth it. Vet bills are annoying enough!

Leave me some feedback below! Who handles the budgeting in your family? Is it a team effort? What are your favorite suggestions for saving money? Let me know if any of these ideas inspired you!

Ways We've Been Saving Money

Monday, August 6, 2018

Popping in today to share the potentially easiest DIY I've done in a long time! (Well, not as easy as cleaning your Alex and Ani bracelets by covering them in ketchup-my most popular post ever!) This one is a recipe for a DIY face wash using castile soap.

I've been on a sort of simplification journey for the good part of a year now, and relentlessly examining different ways to make our lifestyle more efficient and easy to maintain. One of the things I've tried to simplify-which seems so minor-is the amount of products in the shower. It really started to seem ridiculous that Blake and I had separate face washes, shampoos, conditioners, body washes and shaving creams. All because one smelled a little more manly! (Most of my products are scent free anyway.)

It was incredibly easy for us to start using the same shampoos, conditioners and soap, but we had a hard time when it came to choosing a face wash. Stuff that seemed to work for me, didn't work for him. So when we ran out of the last face wash we tried, I decided I'd try a DIY.

DIY Castile Soap Face Wash Recipe
Here's What You Do:
- Foaming Soap Pump (I reused one from BB&W-but you can buy them online as well.)
- 1/4 Cup Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap, any scent
- 5-10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil for oily skin OR 5-10 drops Geranium Essential Oil for normal/aging skin.

Combine all ingredients in your foaming dispenser, fill the rest up with water and shake well before use!
I use one pump, and Blake likes to use two pumps. I will say this gives your face that 'squeaky clean' feeling right after you rinse-which is not my favorite. But, that only seems to last a few seconds and then your face feels completely normal, albeit clean.

The results were almost immediate! We both didn't have the clearest skin when we first started using this cleanser, but after using it morning and night for just a day or two-both of us had great results. And I LOVE that this has limited ingredients, and I already had everything on hand to make it. (I just had to finish up the soap so I could use the dispenser!)

Castile soap is so versatile! I use it in some of my DIY cleaners, but I had no idea you could use it for beauty products too. It's made from vegetables, so it's natural, and it's concentrated, so a little goes a longggg way! So, really this is a great money saving DIY too. Face washes can be pretty pricey.

Leave a comment below if you love DIY's! I'd love to hear if you and your husband use separate bath and body products or have you found some that you both like?!  Tell me what you use castile soap for!

I purposely don't work full-time. I know myself really well. If I did work full time I know I would quickly become a workaholic. It runs in the family and my personality is totally predisposed to being obsessive with things. It's a huge plus that my schedule allows me to keep our home running well! I also do all the yard work and I have time for volunteer work each week.

Overall this works out great. But sometimes the budget is tighter than others. I'm always on the look out for extra income, just in case. I have a few cleaning jobs and I buy and sell a lot on Ebay! I thought I'd share the 3 apps on my phone that make me money. And I'm talkin' easy, painless money!

This is the app I've been using the longest. Google sends you short surveys and rewards you with Play Store Credits. I mostly use them for songs, but you can buy movies or pro versions of your favorite apps. The money you earn seems to line up with how long the survey is. Some are 1 question long, and others are more in depth. I've been asked about my experience at Walgreens, and also if I've ever foraged for truffles. (True Story!) Sometimes you get several surveys a day, and other times it's a few days in between.

   Google Opinion Rewards- screenshot

I started using Ibotta in November and since then I've earned about $50 in rebates. It took a minute to figure out how to use it, but it's also another app that's too easy not to use. Basically you search by your favorite grocery store. Their rebates will appear, and you unlock the ones you want to use. Buy those products and scan your store receipt. Then you get money back! I've only purchased things I would have bought anyway. If you aren't particularly brand-loyal this will work for you.

My favorite rebates are the Groupon and Ebay rebates! You get a certain % back when you buy through Ibotta. Basically- open Ibotta first, click on Ebay and it opens your Ebay app. Once you make the purchase, Ibotta processes your rebate. I shop on Ebay and Groupon all the time, and it's nice to get a few bucks back.

This is my referral link, at no cost to you - but you do get $10 when you sign up! The money you make can go right into your bank account.

Ibotta: Cash Savings & Coupons- screenshot

This is the newest app to my list, but I'm already excited about it! MileUp gives you points everytime you drive. (Automatically!) And those points can be redeemed for gift cards. You can also report your car accidents through the app and they will pay you for that information.

I easily drive 400 miles a week, so the points add up really quickly. And if you take a long car trip, even better! FIY it does take a day or two for your trips to show up. I was nervous that my 85 mile drive the other day wasn't counted, but it just took about 24 hours to appear. It's kinda cool to see the little map at the end too.

This is my referral link for you mobile readers, also at no cost to you.

   MileUp- screenshot

I'm sure there are a million apps that can earn you money, but I love that these 3 are SO easy and uncomplicated. Leave a comment below with your experiences with these apps, or if you know of another easy to use app! Thanks for reading!

There are two very opposite trends going on in the world today. Consumerism is totally the norm, but there has been such a push toward Minimalism lately as well. I find myself stuck in the middle of both lifestyles and it's been confusing.
What I Like
On the one hand I hate being wasteful. And as a part-time housekeeper, clutter gives me the chills! We all have been conditioned to think we need things that we really don't. I watched a Youtube video the other day about how most people have 2 shower curtains-one to actually function as a water barrier and the other as a decoration. You really only need the clear one, but we've come accustomed to thinking that both are standard. That started such a brainstorm for me. How many other things are there like that?

I personally have SO many clothes, yet most days I feel like I don't have anything to wear, or I reach for the same things. I love the approach to minimalist wardrobes that stick to a color scheme so everything coordinates and matches. There are so many benefits to that. Less time staring at your closet deciding, less clutter...

Then there is the whole money-saving aspect of minimalism. If you don't buy as many things, you don't spend as much money. Your purchases are less impulsive, and you invest in quality.

Functionality has always been a priority for me. That's my approach to organization: Is it functional? Am I going to be able to keep up with it? The less stuff you accumulate the easier it is to organize and to implement systems for your family's benefit.

What I Don't Like
I like pretty things! I like my home to be filled with pretty things! I really don't like the idea of bare white walls and a white couch with a single side table, etc...I love homes that are warm and inviting and cozy- with pictures on the wall and a variety of colors.

From what I've read on the minimalist lifestyle, so far, it seems like there are some extreme cases where the person only wears black and their home has 1 plate and 1 cup. Just thinking about that makes me uncomfortable! To me that doesn't seem like an enjoyable life. We were created with the ability to appreciate beauty and variety.

My Approach
-My Wardrobe
This is something I can definitely work on. I LOVE the idea of a color scheme. 80% of my clothes are navy blue anyway, so I think this is something I can easily start. I'd like to cut my closet down by at least 1/3.

I spend way too much money on clothing anyway. I've been pretty good about only buying used items from consignment shops or ebay, but I'd still like to cut back on the amount. It's pretty sad when you flip through your hangers and realize you forgot you owned something. I also have a huge problem with buying workout clothes. I own way too many and that drawer is overflowing.

-My Home
I have a list of a few things that I'd like to buy for our house. In the past, as soon as it popped into my head, I'd run to Target and buy whatever it was that I thought I needed. Now I want to plan ahead for these purchases, shop around and only buy them when our budget easily allows. Ideally, I'd like to buy these new things with the money that I get from selling old things.

I really love having nice things in our house, but I think we've gotten accustomed to a lifestyle that isn't really necessary. Buying decor just for the fall season is actually really frivolous, but it's something Pinterest makes us feel necessary.

So here is my take-away from all of this: I want to have a little bit of both lifestyles. I think less is more, and there are so many benefits to living simply! But, I don't want to live a deprived life either. If I want something I don't see the need to withhold it from myself just because it's not a live sustaining need.

Leave me a comment: Have you ever tried to reevaluate your lifestyle? What do you think of minimalism? Is it too extreme or too boring for you?

On Minimalism

I'm definitely a brand loyalist. Once I find something I like, there is very little deviation. That's for sure the case with Essie nail polishes. It's not just that they have cute little white handles, I genuinely think they go on easier and I love their color selection!

When I lived at home and had a paycheck to burn I would routinely get my nails done at a salon every 2 weeks. Gone are those days because with marriage came a budget tightening. At first I really had zero nail painting abilities, but gradually got better and now I think I do a pretty good job! On my own nails anyway, I have a feeling I'd do terribly on someone else's.

An unexpected bonus of my budget tightening do-it-yourself manicures, was learning that keeping my nails painted keeps me from biting my fingernails! It's easy to talk yourself out of chewing on them when you worked so hard to paint them, and wanting your paint job to last a long time.

I'm completely obsessed with Essie, and that's the majority of what I own. With the last bottle I purchased, I had to expand my storage to two acrylic bins instead of one. Bittersweet for me actually. I love having a nice collection and plenty to choose from, but it totally meant a reorganization of my medicine cabinet to store it.

Here's how I keep my collection tidy:

I found these 2 acrylic organizers at Walmart, and I think they were meant for a drawer, but they are perfect for our not-that-deep medicine cabinet. I had about 18 polishes before I outgrew just one.
And now for my current favorites! I love all of my colors, but these are the ones I have been grabbing more of lately.

one// Fiji
Fiji is an awesome light pink, but it's still a very bright color. Great for both spring and summer. Light colors like this make me feel a little bit more tan!

Petal Pushers was Essie's color of the month in December (or maybe January?) and I hadn't seen it before then. It's such a great blue-gray and I think it's still a good color for spring. I was wearing it the other day when my friend Ashley complimented it, she said she had been looking for a similar color after she saw it on Pinterest. I had her pull up the picture and sure enough it was Petal Pushers! She was first of all amazed that I knew it before I read the caption and secondly really excited that she could borrow it from me anytime.

This has been a favorite lately too. Cute As A Button is a bright coral color, but also not fluorescent. I feel like this color goes great with everything both spring and summer.

Four// Gel Setter
Ok, so this isn't a color, but it's my favorite on this list! I swear by Gel-Setter. It's a super thick top coat that makes your regular polish into a gel manicure. It makes your nails shiny and chip resistant. I'm incredibly tough on my nails, and I even hand wash our dishes. I get atleast a week of chip freeness when I use this top coat...as opposed to maybe 2 days without it.

I'm currently on a nail polish buying freeze until I use up a bottle or two. A girl can only use so many colors...I justify it by thinking about how much money I save by doing my own manicures. At a salon a regular polish manicure can be anywhere from $10-20. Each Essie polish is about $8, and contains countless manicures and pedicures...right?! Yeah, Blake didn't buy it either.

Leave me a comment: Tell me your favorite nail polish brands and colors! Are you a brand loyalist? Do you do your own nails, or do you splurge and go to a salon?
