Watching my niece and nephews grow up and experience things for the first time has been such a joy! I love seeing their faces when they try a new food or see them wobble into their first steps. It has dawned on me how few firsts we get to experience as we grow older. There really is a whole world out there that I haven't experienced yet, and I still love doing things for the first time...Even though I hate being unprepared for things.
August has really surprised me with a few first experiences! I wasn't really expecting all this newness this month.
In August I experienced my first:
one// My First Time Passing Out
Fainting for the first (and subsequent 2nd) time was truly strange. Blake and I were in the bathroom one morning and I started feeling so weird. I was in a lot of pain because of a small biopsy I had done the day before. Also, the room had like zero circulation and the steam was so hot. I just started feeling so dizzy. I remember the feeling of falling and being really confused as I realized I was on the floor. Blake didn't see it happen so he just kind of laughed and asked what I was doing. Then I felt really sick to my stomach and tried to throw up, but that didn't happen. So then I sat on the tub ledge trying to let the nausea pass. That's all I remember until I heard Blake saying my name. Poor guy, he was really concerned. I just remember feeling like my head was rolling around in a washing machine or something. After I came to my hands and feet were really numb and tingly. And that was that! I was fine. I think I was just in a lot of pain and I got really hot. I would rather not pass out again if given the option, but atleast now I know what it feels like prior to and maybe I will be better prepared next time.

two//My First Eye Exam
We all had to stand with one hand over our eye and read a chart at our pediatricians as kids. But this was my first real eye exam at a real eye doctor's. For the past 6 months or so I've noticed a real decline in my ability to read at a distance. This is especially annoying as I do a lot of driving and I need to read street signs and house numbers from far away. I am really happy with the eye doctor I found and she assured me I wasn't crazy and that I am indeed slightly near-sighted. I had to get my eyes dilated too which is the absolute worst and it messed me up for the rest of the day. The funniest part about that was when I was picking out frames for my new glasses. I couldn't even read the brands or price tags. Of course I end up picking out some Kate Spade frames at very steep price. Even when I'm blind I have expensive taste! In the end I went with a cheaper pair of black frames that I'm really happy with!

three// My First Monthly Subscription Box
I have totally had my eye on a few of the those subscription boxes that are out there. Mostly because I love the idea of getting new things in the mail! It's like a present to yourself! This month I signed up for Ipsy and was super impressed with my first makeup bag. Loving it so far and I can't wait to see what next month's bag is like! I did a whole post on my first Ipsy bag in case you missed it. Click here to sign up yourself!

four//My First Bath Bomb
We went to Disney the first weekend in August, and that trip had several firsts of it's own! We had not been to Blizzard Beach yet, and we stayed in a new hotel. One store we stopped at in Downtown Disney was Basin, which is going to be my new favorite. I love that everyone has a bunch of powder on their noses in this store because they are smelling everything! They sell lots of bath goodies like bathbombs, scrubs and bath salts. Their sugar scrubs are to die for, and you can even try them out in a big sink in the center of the store. I picked up a few bath bombs because I loved the idea of them but had never tried one. Now I wish I would have bought more. I don't get to do luxurious baths often, but it's now my new favorite hobby. Maybe I've just had a stressful month, but I have fully enjoyed using these bath bombs. They smell so nice and they really make your skin soft. I also picked up these bath salts and am totally obsessed with them as well.

five// My First Painting with a Twist
These little boutique painting classes are popping up everywhere. I got to finally try one with all my aunts, cousins, my mom and grandma! It was a fun girl's thing and we really enjoyed it! I do a full recap here. I can't wait to get a group of friends together to go again! Next time I'm going to pick a painting that will match my style and maybe I will want to actually hang it up.

After a month like August, I'm anxiously awaiting to see what September holds. Our schedule has a few changes in it, and we have a few fun trips planned, so I'm imagining just as an eventful month! And, I've surprised myself with kind of wishing for cooler weather....I never thought I would say that! I love the summer and I thrive in the heat. I am however looking forward to the change in oppressive Floridian heat as well as new wardrobe options.

Leave me a comment: How was your August? Do you ever have a lot of new experiences in a row like that? How do you feel about new things?

August Firsts

Friday, August 28, 2015

I love the idea of subscription services like Rockbox or Barkbox! Everyone loves getting packages, especially me! It's so exciting to get something new in the mail. I have never signed up for a subscription service (besides Dollar Shave Club) for beauty products. It was always difficult for me to justify the price.
One of my friends signed up for Ipsy, and I was really intrigued. It's a subscription service that sends you a few full sized items in a cute make up bag for just $10 a month.
When you sign up you take a quick beauty quiz that asks you questions about your skin tone, your style and how adventurous you are with make up. The quiz helps them pick products that you will like and can actually use.
I just got my first glam bag! So far I am super impressed. I feel that every single one of the products is something I would actually buy from a store. They are full sized, which makes me feel that I'm getting my money's worth. The makeup bag is really useful too!
Here is what I got in my August bag:
Star Looks Luxe Longwear Eye Liner Pen
-This has a really cool felt tip that will be really great for a winged look. I haven't used liquid liner in a while so I hope I'm not too rusty!

Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco Oil Treatment
-So excited to use this! My hair needs a little lovin.

Clear Clinic Laboratories Vanished Clear Spot Treatment
-I know I will be using this..we all get spots from time to time.

Hikari Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Merlot
-This was the first product I tried out! I love it! I don't think I would ever pick this up myself, because it's a lot darker than I'd usually wear. It's a great thick gloss that seems to be long lasting. The color is insane and it's going to be great this fall.

Alia Cosmetics Luxury Nail Lacquer in Mister Pookies
-Arguably the most exciting product to me. I love my nail polish! While I'm an Essie girl this color is great and I can't wait to paint my nails tonight!

Leave me a comment: Have you guys tried subscription services before? Any I'm missing out on? Are you using Ipsy? What do you think??

2 Kings 5:20
"Gehazi the attendant of Elisha the man of the true God said to himself: 'Here my master has spared this Syrian Naaman by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as Jehovah is living, I will run after him and take something from him.'"

We know that Gehazi's greed and covetousness were wrong, but at 2 Kings 5:20 we see how he reasoned with and convinced himself that it was only right to ask for this payment. This account highlights the danger of rationalizing, minimizing or making excuses. Our actions should fit in line with Jehovah's thinking, not our personal thinking that we have bent to fit our needs.

I loved taking art classes in High School, and have always enjoyed painting. Not having any talent hasn't stopped me from trying! My Grandma wanted to have a girl's day out with all the ladies in the family, and we thought a painting class would be a lot of fun (& different!) We chose to go to Painting with a Twist which is a franchised painting studio. An artist walks you through how to paint something step by step. They have a schedule up on their website so that you can pick a painting you'd like to try.
The Twist part comes from the BYOB policy! I think it's such a fun idea to do with a group! And guys would love it too, you just have to pick a painting they'd be in to.
I personally didn't care for the painting we were signed up to try, it just wasn't my style. We picked this class because it worked for everyone's busy schedules. But, I love the idea and will definitely go back.
The studio provides everything you could possibly need from the aprons, canvases and paints. They even kindly sketched out a few guidelines on the canvases for us, which was super helpful. Our group was placed together with easels and paints ready to go.
Our instructor is also an art teacher at a school, so she was really great at walking us through the painting. The class was super casual and comfortable, and everyone enjoyed singing along with the great soundtrack that was playing in the background...come to think of it, that may have been the wine talking!
We painted a Tiffany's box with lots of sparkly jewelry coming out of it. The artist's painting was super glam and had lots of bling-which wasn't my thing. What I loved about the class is that we were encouraged to make it our own, and so I just toned down the bling in my painting.
All in all it was a super fun afternoon and I really enjoyed being with family. Especially my mom! She was such a trooper because she doesn't enjoy arts and crafts in the least! But, I was quite impressed with her painting. In fact everyone in our group did a great job, and I loved that everyone's paintings turned out a bit different.
In September they have a "Paint Your Pet" class and I am dying to try it! Can you imagine the giant pug painting possibilities??

I probably shouldn't have stood next to the artist's painting with my finished product...they aren't quite identical, are they?
Leave me a comment: Have you ever tried a similar painting class? What did you think?

Everyone loves their momma. I know I do. My mom has taught me so much throughout my life, and she continues to teach me how to be a good person today. She is just plain awesome. Here are five lessons that have stuck with me!

one// Don't Brush Your Hair In The Kitchen
I remember sitting on the barstool in the kitchen brushing my hair one day after being in the pool all afternoon. My mom didn't overreact or anything she just informed me that I was not allowed to brush my hair in the kitchen. I didn't understand this for years! What's it matter?? It matters because it's gross. Brushing your hair in the kitchen is a sure fire way to end up with hairs in your dinner. Not brushing my hair in the kitchen has stuck with me! I will stop right in the doorway until I'm finished.

two// Don't Follow The Recipe
My mom is an amazing cook, and she never ever follows a recipe. She gets inspired by one and then follows her instincts in the kitchen. And it always turns out better! Learning from her not to follow a recipe has made me a much better cook. I'm not handicapped by a formula. I have this distinct memory of my aunt forgetting to bring her cookbook with us on a vacation and she had no idea what to do for dinner without them. If my mom hadn't been there we would have gone out to eat every night for the whole trip.

three// Eat Dinner At The Table Together
This is one thing I adore about my childhood: we always ate dinner at the table together as a family. I know this is because of my mom. We had the best conversations and meals together over the years. One of us kids would set the table, one would clear the table and the other would do the dishes (usually me) and while we didn't love those chores I still crave that structure and routine. Blake and I try to eat at the table together at dinnertime but it doesn't always happen. But if we have kids someday I definitely want to make it more of a priority.

four// How To Love Someone Who Is Difficult Sometimes
I am just like my dad! So I know first hand how frustrating we can be. We are stubborn and critical, and we both want things our way. My mom lovingly and gracefully loves my dad even when he is being difficult. She knows just how to handle him! Now that I am married myself I so appreciate how strategic and patient she is, and I try to follow her example in my relationship.

five// Write Thank You Cards
I hated this as a kid. Anytime my siblings and I received any sort of present we immediately had to sit down at the table and write a Thank You card. First we would thank them specifically for the gift and then talk about how we were going to use it. Then we had to write something nice about the person and sign it. Now I absolutely love my mom taught us the value of being thankful. I remember arguing with her about how a personal "thank you" has to be better than a card. She didn't care, we had to write a card. As an adult there is nothing better than receiving a Thank You card. Don't you love getting a real letter anyway?! Not only is it confirmation that they actually received your gift, but it's so much more personal than a text or a verbal 'Thanks'. I took this so seriously after our wedding that I sent out all of our Thank You cards before we even left for our Honeymoon!

Leave Me A Comment: Did your mom teach you anything similar? What has your momma taught you that has stuck with you forever?

5 Things I've Learned From My Mom

Thursday, August 20, 2015

one// Lobster Sweater (similar)
I picked up this adorable Lobster sweater from Chadwicks about a month ago. I haven't put it with my winter stuff because I can't wait to wear it! It's not very thick so it will be a perfect late summer sweater. But, I can also picture it layered for a more wintery look. Although I can't seem to find it on their website again! A bonus current favorite is this little gold B (B for Blake) necklace! I've been wearing it every day, and I love that it has a little swarovski Mickey too.

Have I mentioned this before?? I am obsessed with all things stationery. The desk drawer was getting quite a bit crowded with my collection. I ordered this acrylic mail sorter that really does the trick of organizing/displaying all of my notecards. I should actually send some of these out!

I did an entire post on my new Lilly agenda. I'm so happy with it! It is the perfect size and is already filling up. I even ordered a little gold monogram from this etsy shop for the front cover. You know, the whole, if it's not moving monogram it thing.

four// New Living Room Pretties
I've gone a bit crazy lately with redecorating. I'm always changing things up! I love swapping out one decoration for another and playing around with the set up. We made a trip to Ikea this month, that coupled with several trips to Target, I'm really loving our living room. I also bought this print from an adorable calligraphy etsy shop and love how it turned out!
We made a stop in Basin at Downtown Disney on our last trip and I'm so loving everything I bought! I grabbed a few bath bombs in various scents, these bath salts (they smell amazing!!), coconut lip balm (best ever!) and coconut lip scrub. I've already used one of the bath bombs and it was so relaxing! The bombs I bought even had cute Mickey confetti inside!

Leave me a comment: What are you currently loving?! Are you always changing your house around like me? How do you keep your office supplies organized?

2 Kings 2:2
Elijah said to Elisha: "Stay here, please, because Jehovah has sent me on to Bethel." But Elisha said: "As surely as Jehovah is living and as you are living, I will not leave you."

Elisha is a great example of displaying Loyal Love at 2 Kings 2:2. He was determined to stick by his friend Elijah. He refused to abandon him even when given the opportunity. Loyal love is the kind of love that holds on and doesn't let go. While love and loyalty are both important qualities in a friendship, Loyal Love is different in that it will move us to act in behalf of our friends-like Elisha was moved to stick with Elijah.

Light Blue Linen Top: Loft Factory
White Cords: Lilly Pulitzer via Consignment
Wedges: Target (old) {similar} or {similar}

Both my Sister's and Parent's wedding anniversaries are in August, and they are only a week apart! We usually combine the celebration into one dinner every year. It's so nice to have the whole family in one room. I love giving gifts! The funny part is I am absolutely terrible at keeping a secret so everyone is always surprised when I haven't spoiled the surprise. I just get so excited and want them to know what they are going to get! Not only do I usually give it away, but I also go completely overboard with the gift giving. I just love presents!

This outfit is so comfortable! I have to tell you about these pants. I got them at a consignment shop, still with the tags on them! They were originally $158, and I got them for less than $5!! Honestly I got them because I figured I could resell them online and make a profit...but then I tried them on and they fit like a glove. I didn't already have a pair of white pants, so it wasn't hard to decide to keep them. Although- I haven't had a pair of flare pants in a while, so they feel kind of strange. & I have to wear heals if I wear them out because they are a bit long and I do not want the bottoms to get dirty. I quickly took off the shoes as soon as we got home!

Leave me a comment: Are you an over gifter?? What was your best consignment find?

I'm Watching: As far as bad tv goes I've watched a ton this week! Loving Bachelor in Paradise-it's so ridiculous and I love that Ashley S is the most sane one of the group. Also fully enjoyed the PLL reveal. Should have seen that coming the whole time, but what can I say I was surprised.

I'm Reading:  After going to Ikea last weekend my mind is turning with so many ideas! I love articles like this one that has super clever ways to use Ikea products. I'm finding that the carts and bookshelves are so versatile. I really wish we had room in the car for this self (in green) on our last trip.

I'm Listening To: Currently obsessed with Spotify's workout playlists. It's perfect for running or my current challenge group. Right now we are doing a 30 day arm challenge which includes air punches. The punches are so fun especially paired with the right song.

I'm Wishing For: I recently dropped my phone, and while it's okay, my case cracked on one side. I'm happy the case did it's job and saved my phone! Now I'm on the search for a new phone case. I have a Note 4, and that isn't the most popular phone, so there aren't that many cases out there to choose from.

I Need To: This weekend I am making Warm Chocolate Melting Cake (sooo yum. it's the chocolate cake that is like molten lava in the middle) this weekend. So I need to locate some extra ramekins so I can make one for each person in our group.

I'm Looking Forward To: So many things! We have a lot of fun things coming up on the schedule. This weekend we are celebrating both my parent's and sister's wedding anniversaries, which is such a special dinner because our whole family ends up in one room.

I'm Making: Tonight is going to be a busy night, but instead of going out to eat I'm going to make Breakfast Quesadillas. I guess I haven't shared this recipe before but they are so yummy and easy.

Favorite Moment of the Week: I went on a run for the first time in months this week and it was so awesome! Hot, sweaty, and difficult...but awesome! I'm going to try to go again tomorrow morning.

Weekly Delly: Blake took this picture the other night and it cracks me up! Dell can't keep her tongue in her mouth anymore, it's so cute!

Leave me a comment: What's going on in your week??

I love that in the summer it doesn't get dark until late. There is so much to do in the evenings outside while it's warm. Our summer evenings have been scheduled to the max! Whether there are chores to do, errands to run, or walks to take. That doesn't leave much time for tv. Honestly we haven't been watching too much tv at all lately!
The fall is different though. The time change makes it dark earlier and our days don't seem so packed. Although I love the summertime, I am really missing our favorite shows! Here is a list of when some of my favorites are coming back on.

Favorites:
Castle: Mon. Sept. 21st
Grey's Anatomy: Thurs. Sept. 24th
Once Upon A Time: Sun. Sept. 27th
The Flash: Tues. Oct. 6th
Arrow: Wed. Oct. 7th

New Shows:
Supergirl: Mon. Oct. 26th
Heroes Reborn: Thurs. Sept. 24th

1 Kings 21:25
"Indeed, there has never been anyone like Ahab, who was so determined to do what was bad in the eyes of Jehovah, egged on by his wife Jezebel."

Ahab had earned the bad reputation mentioned at 1 Kings 21:25 mostly because he was influenced by his wife Jezebel. This account shows how big of an effect wives can have on their husbands. We can manipulate, nag or be combative like Jezebel, or instead we can build up our families by being supportive and by encouraging our husbands to do good things.

As annual passholders of Walt Disney World, it is not often at all that we get to have 3 Disney firsts in one weekend! That is one of the reasons I love vacationing at Disney. There is so much to be done and new things to try. We have been going multiple times a year for years and still haven't touched every attraction.

Staying onsite is just the best. Yeah, it's pricy, but so worth what you pay for. We've never stayed at either Port Orleans hotels, but were so impressed! We stayed in one of the alligator bayou rooms and it was great. Gotta love a room with a ceiling fan! One of the highlights was the cool boat trip you can take over to Downtown Disney!

The second First: Splitsville
After not going to Downtown Disney for a long time I was so blown away by all the changes! The parking garage is impressive in itself! (There are little charts that tell you how many spaces are left on a row, how smart is that!?) There was quite a bit of construction so that made for some crowded walkways, but it is going to be so nice when they are finished. We stopped in a few stores, like Basin for bath bombs and this cool shaving shop called The Art of Shaving. Next time I want to get Blake an appointment there. We ended up at Splitsville for dinner and bowling and I will never be the same! Our bowling alley will just never compare. Dinner, drinks, bowling and live music all in one place is pretty awesome. Not awesome is not packing any socks and having to buy theirs. Although they are pretty nice socks..
It was so dark in there my phone camera just couldn't keep up.

Gotta love the granny throw! And how cool is it that the bumpers will raise up and down for each individual bowler??

The third First: Typhoon Lagoon!
We have been to Blizzard Beach, but never Typhoon Lagoon. As Florida residents we were able to buy the after 2pm year pass which is an amazing deal! We literally rode everything between 2pm and closing, so it's definitely worth it. Can't wait to go back! We also have Florida Seasonal park passes which have black out dates in the summer, so now we will be able to do the water parks when we are craving a Disney trip in those hot summer months!
My favorite attraction was Shark Reef! You borrow a mask and vest and you can snorkel in a saltwater tank with Sharks and Rays!

One thing I like about Typhoon Lagoon is how lush and tropical it is. Blizzard Beach is a lot of fun but there is just a ton more concrete. Typhoon Lagoon had these purple flowers everywhere and they were so gorgeous. We had a blast riding the lazy river and jumping out at each waterslide along the way. We were so grateful the storms passed over and we only had to deal with clouds. I do not mind avoiding sunburns! Especially when our sunscreen was locked up in our locker and not easy to get to.
Now we are trying to convince all of our friends to get the waterpark pass! It's so much more affordable than the big park passes! And who wants to go to the regular parks when it is so unbelievably hot out?!
We had such a great weekend! You can tell how much fun you had by how hard it is to get up Monday morning.

Leave me a comment: What's on your Disney bucket list!? Have you been to Splitsville or Typhoon Lagoon? What is your favorite Disney hotel?

xoxo Kristen

A Few Disney Firsts

Monday, August 10, 2015

I'm Watching: Blake and I had a date night for the first time in a long time last Saturday! He planned the whole thing, which is so cute and appreciated. He bought us movie tickets to see the new Mission Impossible movie and made dinner reservations. I didn't even know a new MI movie was coming out! It was decent, but I kind of think Tom Cruise needs to retire this type of movie. Although at the same time I give him major props for staying in shape and performing his own crazy stunts!

I'm Reading:  Iheart Organizing had 2 great DIY posts this week! I loved this one on how to make your own acrylic clipboard, and may just have to attempt it. Also, totally filing away her idea on how to store kid's school memories. My mom saved every piece of art we did in school and it's so fun to look through!
& Have you seen Khloe Kardashian's fitness closet?? It's the dream. I have so many workout clothes, it would be so amazing to display them like her.
Loving this outfit post from Lofty Closet. Mint is just the best and will never get old.
And one last thing from around the web: I'm going to try out ifchic.com...Every day you can collect 6 coins that equal $6. On the 24th of the month you can use your coins towards a purchase. If I understand correctly that means you can collect $180 to spend! I'm going to try it out and see how it goes. Let me know if you have tried it!

I'm Listening To: Sugar, you by Oh Honey

I'm Wishing For: I'm not wishing for anything personally right this moment, but I am wishing for a few extra $$ to pay for the gifts we need to buy this month! August is a big anniversary month for some of our closest people-the close people you get gifts for. It all adds up! Especially because I am quite the over-gifter.

I Need To: Ironing!! This is something that I always put off. The pile just grows and grows. Both Blake and I wore a ton of dress clothes in the last week so that means it's an extra big pile. I just need to put on a good movie and get to it.

I'm Looking Forward To:  Disney Weekend!!

I'm Making: This week we made the best blueberry chocolate chip waffles from scratch. SOO good. We even made extra batter for the next day. Anybody else put peanut butter on their waffles and pancakes? That's the way I've always eaten them, but Blake thinks it's so weird.

Favorite Moment of the Week: Last week I was completely out of my routine, in a good way, but I was so eager to get back to regular life. It's so funny that I crave adventure and excitement but I am just so happy to go back to a schedule and routine.

Weekly Delly: Sometimes Delly goes outside and doesn't come back in for awhile, and everytime I go to check on her she is just laying out in the grass staring at the sun. She loves it for about 5 minutes, but it's so hot in Florida she is ready to come back in shortly.

On a sad note, Willy the pug passed away this week. Willy is famous from my Pug Pro/Con post. He was Blake's parent's pug who was the very first pug I've ever met. He was a special guy, and we are really sad that he won't be there next time we visit his parents. Pets just become such parts of the family and I know they will miss his presence.
