This winter my skin has really suffered! It all started with having quite a few ultra dry patches I needed to address, but then this little skincare journey of mine took off. I'm turning 35 this year, so that might have something to do with it too. I've been playing around with some new products, and thought I'd share some goodies I really like.

Grande Lash Serum

If I talk you into any product in this post, let it be this serum! I started using it in December and it's remarkable!! My lashes are noticeably thicker and longer in just a few weeks. I tried the Rodan and Fields serum in 2020 and this is a fraction of the price and I've gotten better results. You just swipe it on once a day.

Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist

If you want a toner that firms and hydrates, this is a big winner. I have the mini version on Amazon subscribe and save! Hydration is such a must this time of year, but I think I will like using this even in the summer.

A313 Cream

I was definitely influenced on this one. I've been seeing this french cream/ointment all over tiktok, and decided I'd give it a go! It's a very thick retinol cream meant to help with fine lines and other skin woes. It's got the texture of Vaseline and you put it on at night. I haven't been using it long enough to provide you with a real before and after, but I can absolutely notice a difference in my skin's smoothness. I made Blake try it, and he did say it made his face quite itchy, which seems to be a common complaint in the reviews although that wasn't my experience.

Dermalogica Precleanse

I got a bunch of sample sized Dermalogica products, and that's how I was introduced to the Precleanse oil. You just rub it on your face before your regular cleanser and it removes make up and other debris ahead of time. It's got a great scent and I think it makes such a difference when it comes to getting my make up all the way off. A little goes a long way!

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

This product is awesome! It's a fine powder, that when mixed with water becomes a great scrub. My skin is so so soft after using this! It's also good for daily use.

Uncommon Beauty Bronzing Drops

We visited the Uncommon James store in Charleston recently on vacation, and they gave me a sample size of these bronzing drops. I knew from the moment I put it on my face I'd be buying the full sized product. You mix a few drops (the more drops the darker the tan) with your moisturizer and it provides the BEST glow ever. To feel a little tan as a Florida girl in February is a special thing. 😂

Skincare Items I'm Loving

Thursday, February 20, 2025

Forever a fan of drugstore (and affordable!) beauty products, I wanted to try something new as I saw my makeup bag dwindling in product. When it came time to replenish some of my makeup, I wanted to replace them with some 'cleaner' options. It's a little embarrassing how much research I did on this stuff, but after some time, I settled on trying Honest Beauty!

Honest Beauty actually fits my needs like a glove! I was looking for a cleaner brand, with a more natural 'no makeup, makeup' look. I really loved the color options when it came to my skin tone. (more on that later.)

There were two other things that were important to me when choosing some new makeup. Price and accessibility. I'm budget conscience and rarely splurge on myself. (Speaking as someone who has actively needed a massage for 2 months for some unbearable tension, but won't schedule it because I hate spending the money.) It didn't need to be the cheapest product on the shelf, but I did not want to break the bank. And then, if I ran out of something unexpectedly, I wanted to be able to go grab it at Target last minute if necessary.

Plus, if I'm being honest (LOL see what I did there!?) the packaging is killer and it looks so great all together!!

So here's what I got and my thoughts on each product:

CC Tinted Moisturizer

Shade: Dune
I'm not a full coverage foundation person, so a CC cream is my preference. This just blurs any imperfections and also has SPF. Perfect for the summer!

Bright Eyes Tinted Eye Cream

Shade: Sandstone
Maybe my most important makeup staple...got look awake! Plus this has hyaluronic acid. So it brightens and hydrates.

Luminizing Glow Powder

Shades: Dusk Reflection and Midnight Reflection
A standout product! I use Dusk for bronzer and Midnight for highlighter. Super pretty and just ups the glow so much.

Crème Cheek and Lip Color

Shade: Rose Pink
This is actually the first crème blush I've ever tried and it's so nice! I use my makeup sponge to apply, but there might be a better way. Still new to it, but really enjoying this one.

Get It Together Eye Shadow Palette

Wow, wow these colors. I love them so much. They are ideal for my skin tone, but I'm not sure how'd they'd look on someone fair? It seems like they should develop some more shades. The palette is split in half - one side for more day time looks and the other for night.

Honestly Healthy Brow Gel

Shade: Taupe
I can't believe there was a time when I didn't do anything to my brows. I really love this because it's not heavy, and it really just ever so slightly darkens and grooms my eyebrows. Taupe is my color, but I think I could go darker for something more bold.

Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid eyeliner for ever! I love love love this eyeliner. It's got a great brush and stays put. Note that I am not wearing it in the photo above. I usually do not include eyeliner in my everyday look, just when I go out with friends or something like that.

Honestly Healthy Lash Tint Serum

Shade: Black
YES to this! This is a lash tint but with a serum to promote healthy lashes. Think of it as the lightest mascara you'll ever use. Skinny wand, and just enough product to make your eyelashes darker. I use this on days when I'm not wearing makeup at all, but want to have a little something on my lashes to look more awake.

Lengthening Mascara and Primer

If you don't try any other Honest Beauty products - make your one purchase this one! It's STELLAR. The primer is everything, and the mascara itself does not flake and gives you lashes for days. My mom noticed the very first time I wore this mascara and she never comments on things like that.

Tinted Lip Balm

Shade: Summer Melon
Oooh, this stuff is the bomb. It's like 'my lips, but better'. Moisturizing and just enough to make you feel great. I want every color. I just ordered their liquid lipstick, but haven't gotten it yet, so I will have to report back!

I grabbed some fresh makeup brushes too, how fun are these rose gold ones from Elf

Summer Make Up | Full Face Honest Beauty

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

When I get dressed in the morning, I really feel like the finishing touch is spritzing on a little fragrance. In high school, I wore Hollister Co. perfume which was a unisex fragrance - and I LOVED it. They discontinued it, so I swear I rationed those last few sprays forever before I ran out for good. For graduation, I was gifted Brittney Spears Curious perfume and also really loved that scent! In fact, if I smell it today it brings me right back to 2008.

Drugstore Beauty Faves | www.kristenwoolsey.com

I've been a It Cosmetics concealer person for years, but lately I noticed it was settling under my eyes in a very unattractive way. (It's perfect for blemishes though!) I wanted to try something thinner, and this was the perfect choice. I love the colorstay foundation, and have been equally happy with this concealer. I got the shade light medium.

New Products I'm Loving | www.kristenwoolsey.com

By no means am I a beauty guru, but I do love trying out new products and finding great stuff! With so many 'misses' when it comes to beauty products, I thought I'd share a few products that I've tried recently that I love!

New Beauty Products I'm Loving

Monday, November 11, 2019

I know I'm not the only one who loves finding new treasures in the aisles of Target! I hardly ever get to go and just browse. I actually usually avoid doing it because I don't want to end up with things I don't need. But, I have 3 new favorite beauty products you can find at Target, and they are definitely worth sharing.

In an effort to ditch chemically and toxic products in my home, I really cut back on anything with fragrance. In fact, most perfumes and body sprays give me a headache! However, I did miss having some sort of scent. (Especially since my natural deodorant journey is still experimental! ha!)

I found these perfumes in Target, and was immediately intrigued. These perfumes are minimal ingredients, and the fragrance comes from essential oils. Plus free of a lot of other junky stuff. I LOVE the Daydreamer scent! It reminds me of what I wore in High School-which was Victoria's Secret Endless Love (I think). It comes in a spray, but I'm really digging the rollerball. (Their packaging is so cute too. I totally admit to being drawn in by that alone.)

Yes To PrimRose Oil Mud Mask
Who doesn't love a good face mask? I love them, but this is the first one that I've actually seen a real difference in my skin after using it. Yes To has a ton of different masks, but I like that this one visibly reduces redness. I bought a couple to have on hand for those nights when I want to relax in a bath.

Essie Spring 2018 (Anchor Down, At The Helm, Perfect Mate)
My nail polish collection got out of hand a few years ago, so I really pared it down to just a few trusty colors. I haven't been tempted to buy anything new in a long time. The Essie Spring 2018 was calling my name though! I love all the colors, but fell in love with these three. Perfect Mate is the PERFECT peachy pink. Anchor Down is a very cool shimmery navy. And I've had a major thing for orange this year, so At The Helm was an easy buy as well!

Keeping my nails painted is the only way I keep from biting them, so I've been steadily painting them every few nights. It's been awesome to have a few new colors in the rotation.

3 Step DIY Natural Skin Care Routine

Part of my main goal for the year is to really keep up a good skin care routine! It sort of hit me a few months ago, when the girl who did my eyebrows suggested an anti-aging serum that they started selling. It was actually pretty terrible because the salesperson at the mall earlier that day asked me if I was wanted to try on a pair of jeans with rips or no rips, looked me up and down and then laughed to herself. (The answer was heck no, I don't want rips in my jeans, but I'm not that much older than you!!)

I am in my *late* twenties now, and I know I really should be doing lots of good skin care now for the future. I shared my DIY face wash recipe last summer, and since then I've been able to really tweak that recipe and I've added 2 more steps. (The original recipe is still great!)

I've been following this routine for at least 2 months, and have been very impressed! There are 3 steps like most skin care systems you can buy: Cleanse, tone, and moisturize. These recipes use very few ingredients that are safe and non toxic.

3 Step DIY Natural Skin Care Routine

Cleanser
Adding just one ingredient to my original recipe makes such a difference in this foaming cleanser. It's such a luxurious foam, and this is so pleasant to use. Frankincense is great for wrinkles, lavender is calming and tea tree will kill bacteria.
Here is what you do:
Add the following to an empty foaming dispenser:
- 1/4 cup unscented castile soap
- 4 Tbsp jojoba oil
- 15 drops lavender
- 15 drops tea tree oil
- 15 drops frankincense
Fill the rest up with distilled water. Shake before use!
Toner
I've read about so many benefits to using apple cider vinegar on your face! I historically have pretty bad blackheads on my nose, but since using this I have seen a huge difference. The smell is potent to say the least. I do think you get used to it though.
Here is what you do:
Combine the following to a glass jar:
- 1 part distilled water
- 1 part apple cider vinegar (get the kind that says "with the mother")
Apply with a cotton pad and let dry.
Moisturizer
This step was the weirdest to start. Rubbing oil on your face?! It really is amazing though. Jojoba oil is so moisturizing and it actually absorbs into your face. I use it on my entire face-even the places I consider oily. It does not make your face greasy because it does not clog your pores.  Hello glow!
Here is what you do:
Using the same bottle of jojoba oil that went into your face wash add:
- 15 drops lavender
- 15 drops frankincense
Use about 1-2 drops and massage into your skin. I usually wait about 5 minutes before applying makeup. (Tip: Places like your eyelids don't seem to absorb this super well, so make sure they are dry before applying eye shadow.)
I do these three steps in the morning, and then again in the evening after removing my makeup. This is the first time I've really stuck with a system, but I know it's because I've actually seen it improve my skin. I love it so much I wanted to share!

Leave a comment below if someone has implied that you aren't so young anymore recently! Do you have a trusty skin care routine that you love? How about making your own beauty products, have you tried it?!

My 3 Step DIY Skin Care Routine

What's In My Makeup Bag & Simple Makeup Routine (Full Face!)

Growing up, I never really wore any makeup. My forte was black eyeliner and mascara in High School. (Although someone should have taught me how to cover my pimples-because I have some really unflattering photos from age 15-20.) It's probably only been in the last year or two that I've actually become interested in makeup at all.

I hesitate to even call this a daily makeup routine, because I honestly don't wear a full face every day. I gravitate toward simple, ritualistic routines-so this whole look has been tweaked to be easy and foolproof. If I'm doing a full face, this is what I do. I actually don't own any other makeup, because if I'm not going to use it regularly I don't want the mental clutter. (I hope that doesn't sound too fussy, because I'm actually going for the complete opposite of fussy!)

I'm so grateful for Youtube tutorials! If I'm going to give credit where credit is due, I have to say that Youtube is the source of all of my beauty knowledge! I so appreciate when people share what products work for them, and I get to see a demonstration of it in action. Bonus points if the person has similar coloring to me! That's why I thought I'd share what products I've settled on using-you might be like me and love to see what others are using!

Foundation & Concealer
Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation // It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer // Real Techniques Sponge

I'm not actually sure which is supposed to go on first, concealer or your foundation. I've heard people do it both ways! I typically put on concealer first, then my foundation, and then touch up any big blemishes with more concealer.

My foundation is rather dark, but it is the end of summer so it still matches my skin well. I will be picking up a slightly lighter shade in the next few weeks for winter. I highly recommend this foundation if you have oily/combo skin. Works great!

I also can't brag enough on the Real Techniques sponges! They are excellent for blending and I love the different faces of the sponge for different areas of your face. I use them for both the concealer and foundation.

Matte Powder & Highlighter
Bare Minerals Invisible Light Translucent Powder Duo // Luxie Beauty Brush

The real rockstar of this duo is the matte powder. It works absolute wonders if you have oily/combo skin! Use it on your T-zone for a perfectly matte look. The highlighter is great too, but very subtle. Great for an everyday look, but if I want it to stand out more I opt for the highlighters in my Carli Bybel palette. (Which you will see below.)

Blush
Nars Blush in Orgasm

This is the most gorgeous blush, and it has a big following because it works on every skin tone! Love it. It's got a bit of shimmer, which makes it just glow on your cheeks. (Probably another reason I don't go too crazy on the highlighter.) I actually use a contour brush to apply it, which I think helps me keep from going too overboard. Big price tag on this, but it lasts for-ever.

Eyebrows
L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eye La Palette Eye Shadow // Aesthetica Pro Brush // Elf Brush

Because I have quite dark and thick eyebrows, I don't go too crazy on filling them in. I do use a spooly brush to groom them and then I fill them in lightly with this (don't laugh!) light, matte brown shade from my L'oreal eyeshadow palette. This is an excellent nude eyeshadow palette that I do use interchangeably with the Carli Bybel one.

Eyeshadow
BH Cosmetics Carli Bybel Palette

Oh, this palette! Probably obvious by the photo, this thing is well loved. The colors are gorgeous, they have great pigment, and they stay on your face! I use them all, and it's fun to mix and match. I also love the L'Oreal palette, mentioned above, just as much. I use them equally and sometimes together.

Eyeliner & Mascara
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara // Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
Too Faced Better Than Sex Black Mascara

These are the real MVPs of my makeup bag! If nothing else, I make sure to put on eyeliner and mascara. The Kat Von D liner is amazing! It really does stay all day, especially if you are like me and do two layers. The tapered brush is also very helpful for wings. And I will never buy another mascara than the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. It's legitimately the best out there. I have both the regular and waterproof and both work so well. (I did a side by side comparison of this mascara last year in this post!)

Lips
LipSense Aussie Rose // Dark Pink // Bombshell
LipSense (which I bought through my friend Carrie, who no longer sells it.)

Ah, Lipsense. It's everywhere! I took the chance and bought some even though I was really skeptical. It's awesome guys. There is no better way to wear lipstick. I have three colors that I LOVE and change out as often as I'd like. (I'm wearing Aussie Rose in the photo below.) Dark Pink is my favorite, but it doesn't go with everything. And, Bombshell is so pretty and people comment on how I look everytime I wear it. (Not like, "Oh I like your lipstick.." but more like "You have a glow about you today!" Real compliments people!)

I do my makeup in my bathroom, which recently got a little makeover itself. I use our medicine cabinet mirror, which I usually have to pull open to see closer to my face. I do have that little stand mirror on the counter, but it's a little heavy for a full face of makeup. It is great for eyebrow plucking however!

I pull my hair back in either a loose ponytail or use a headband. I'd say it takes me 10 minutes tops for a full face of makeup, but I do like to take my time if I'm getting ready for a special event. There is something soothing or therapeutic about getting ready! (I absolutely do not feel the same way about doing my hair.)

before// My Daily Makeup Routine        after// My Daily Makeup Routine

In hindsight, I should have done an after photo in natural lighting, but if you'd like to see that, I am wearing this entire look in this post. Also, in case you are curious, my makeup bag is from Kate Spade, which I got for a steal in the last surprise sale! Those surprise sales are amazing if you are saving up to buy a bag!

Leave a comment below if you love a simple and ritualistic make up routine! I'd love to know what's in your makeup bag and what your go-to products are. Do we share any favorites?!
