Celebration Pointe & Spending Freeze Update

Monday, June 4, 2018

We popped over to Gainesville last weekend to check out the new Celebration Pointe shopping center. Even though not much is open yet, we really loved walking around! There are a lot of places to sit and hang out, which I think is a great shift in what 'malls' are turning in to.

The real reason this was our destination is because we had plans to see Solo! There is absolutely nothing like a brand new movie theater. I am SO thrilled that theaters let you reserve seats now. The fact that you can show up right on time and know exactly where to sit is great! This theater not only had those comfy reclining seats, but also a tray table for your snacks! I'm easy to please, what can I say?

This outfit is something you will see me in all summer! Thank you to my sister in law who gifted to me this cute bag and sunglasses. Both pieces I don't think I would have ever picked out for myself!

I mentioned earlier this year that I didn't plan on buying any new clothes in 2018.. A lofty goal indeed! I'm about 6 months in, so I wanted to do a little update. Have I succeeded? Yes and No....

I went a solid 4 months without a single purchase. That was incredibly beneficial. I really got to see what pieces are MVPs in my closet, and I was able to tell really quickly what I still didn't gravitate towards. It made me more creative with outfits, and I made a big effort to wear everything in my closet. In fact, by the beginning of May, I had 2 trashbags full of clothing to either donate or sell. My personal style became even more clear with this project.

In that post, I mentioned that I already knew I was going to need to replace a few items in my closet this year. So, I was sorta setting myself up for failure! Mainly I knew I was going to be replacing 2 of my favorite skirts. I got 100% of my money's worth out of those skirts and they were looking terrible! I was able to find the PERFECT replacement for them, and I hope to share an outfit post with that skirt soon.

Additionally, some things have come up this year that required some purchases:

Florida weather being as unpredictable as it is, I found a gap in my spring wardrobe. Meaning we actually had a bit of spring! Usually we get a month or two of winter and then it's back up in the 80s. I really needed some kind of transitional sweater/top that wouldn't be as thick as my winter clothing but still appropriate for the chill. I was able to find 2 crewneck sweaters from Old Navy that are may be the cutest things I've ever owned. I only got to wear them a few times and then the temperature went up! I can't wait to wear them again!

Also, as I think I've mentioned before, Blake and I started doing some volunteer construction work that requires long pants but not jeans. That was something I did not have at all! I picked up 3 pairs of work pants from Old Navy (they've been killing it this year!). These pants have been great, and I can wear them to work as well.

The first impulse buy was this dress from Target. I had an event to go to, and I reallyyy wasn't feeling any of the dresses I had. So, when I saw this dress I really buckled. It was under $30 and I have never gotten more compliments on a dress before. I did take off that hideous belt and add my own.

Which brings me to this post! The top I'm wearing is another new item. In the same shipment, I bought another skirt and plain off-white top to go with it. (Have I talked about how much I love and wear skirts?) The skirt and top were an intentional purchase, and the top I'm wearing here was an afterthought. A moment of weakness! I was compelled to buy it because it is SO me.

All in all, a hand full of new clothes in 6 months isn't a failure to me. I really would like to go the rest of the year without buying anything at all, but I'm not sure if that is going to happen. As I've learned, things come up and that's totally okay.

I'm sure I will feel more strongly by the end of the year, but I know this was a great project to take on! Challenging yourself from time to time is so important. Auditing yourself and your habits is a key to growth. My spending habits have become really clear to me, and I can already tell what triggers me to want to shop. Hopefully I can use that knowledge to continue this goal for the rest of the year!

Leave a comment below if you love the fact that you can reserve seats at movie theaters now! How are you doing with your goals? Did you think I could go a whole year without buying anything? Even I knew I couldn't!

  1. That peplum top is so cute! And I love reading about your spending freeze. I was just doing some organizing in my closet last night and I have so much surplus. I need to donate a lot and then see what pieces I actually do love and actually wear them more! I also love that you can reserve seats at movie theaters. Its worth the extra $2 in my opinion. Happy Monday!

  2. I love the outfit!! (And I agree that malls turning into places to sit and hang out is the best!) I'm really impressed you went 4 months without spending, and I think that was worth the goal-setting even though technically you didn't make it to a year! I need to make more goals for myself like that, so that even if I don't fully make it at least I'll have worked towards it (example A: I should actually exercise......) haha

  3. I love reserving seats at the theater! We actually got Movie Pass at the beginning of the year and have been going to the movies almost every week. It’s so fun to keep going and feel like it’s cheaper every time.
I loved Soli!! It was just so fun to watch, I can’t wait to see if they make another.

  4. Your outfit is so chic - especially with the glasses and earrings. I think you've done brilliantly well to keep your purchases to the bare minimum. Did your pledge involve accessories? Because you can really transform great outfits like yours with different bags, glasses, earrings etc to keep the clothing side capsule . It would be impossible not to buy ANYTHING - I guess that's not the point - maybe more that like you said, it made you think more about what you bought and really define your style? It LOOKS like it has worked - you look super put together and stylish (not that you weren't before) you can just see how super happy and confident you look in your style! You look great!

    1. Thank you, as always! I agree, accessories are a great way to mix things up. I am trying not to buy anything new, but I do have a good collection of necklaces and things like that I can use.
I do feel confident in this outfit, I'm so glad you noticed!

  5. Several of the theaters near me have the nice reclining seats and I love them! My closest theater doesn't though, so I only enjoy the reclining seats once in awhile.
I think you're still doing great with your clothes ban. The things you got, it sounds like you really needed. Way to go!

    1. The closest theater to us is old, so we like to travel just a bit further to a nicer one! It makes it more of an event! And also forces us to pick movies that we really want to see!

  6. I can’t believe how much Gainesville is growing and changing! It’s probably a good thing this didn’t happen when I was in school or I would have been broke! Ha. I love your editing on these photos too!

    1. It's changed SO much! We don't live far, but it's still amazing every time we pop over and something new has been built. Lots of new restaurants!

I love reserved movie theaters, too!! It's a nice upgrade :)
I love that dress. I'm a sucker for olive/army green. Totally acceptable to replace loved-on clothes, too. That's not *really* cheating ;)

  10. You look super cute!! Love those sunnies, I totally want some pink ones, but I have so many I can't justify another pair. Gaah! I honestly can't remember the last time I bought clothes. Maybe in January?! Hmm.
