Welcome to day fourteen of the Declutter Challenge! I shared the schedule here. Each day has a 10 minute task, and an option to kick it up a notch and declutter further.

On day fourteen we are decluttering our Media. Think: books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, video games...
And then, if you want to take the challenge to the next level declutter your entire living room.

I surprised myself, and didn't have much in our living room to declutter. I was happy with our collection of movies and vinyl records. We actually used to have 100s of movies, but went digital a few years ago. So the ones we still have are all time favorites.

I did find a few books to take to my favorite used book store. They do trades. So, I brought a handful of older hard covers and they gave me store credit. I did pick up one new release, but I still have some money to spend there. Anther option is to take books to Free Little Libraries. And, if you want to try to sell them, I use Pango Books for that.

Even though my living room didn't have anything to declutter, I decided to take on our front coat closet as well, and I was very happy to get that straightened out!

Declutter Challenge Day 14 - Media & Living Room

Wednesday, February 14, 2024

Welcome to day four of the Declutter Challenge! I shared the schedule here. Each day has a 10 minute task, and an option to kick it up a notch and declutter further.

Today, we are taking on our water bottle and tumbler collections. If you want to take it to the next level, declutter all of your glassware and stemware.

This was an interesting one for me! I actually made two passes at our cups. In the first pass, I did take out a few pieces but not many. Then I decided to take down all our stemware to wash it. That's the secret here with this challenge I think - take it all out, don't just look at it! When I had to painstakingly put it back I ended up saying goodbye to several cups and glasses. Additionally, I removed an organizer that wasn't serving us anymore.

Declutter Challenge Day 4 - Water Bottles

Sunday, February 4, 2024

Welcome to day three of the Declutter Challenge! I shared the schedule here. Each day has a 10 minute task, and an option to kick it up a notch and declutter further.

Today we are tackling our digital clutter! Take 10 minutes to go through the accounts you follow on Instagram and click unfollow on anything cluttering your feed! I find it helps me to choose a number of accounts to follow and if I'm over the limit someone's got to go. There are a lot of ways to declutter digitally. You can empty your downloads folder, clear out random screenshots...you can go through your contacts. Essentially, be as thorough as you'd like to be. Remove any apps that aren't serving you!

I ended up unfollowing several accounts on social media, as well as removing a bunch of apps I don't use. I did just get a new phone in January, so fortunately for me, today wasn't too hard!

Declutter Challenge Day 3 - Digital Declutter

Saturday, February 3, 2024

Welcome to day two of the Declutter Challenge! I shared the schedule here. Each day has a 10 minute task, and an option to kick it up a notch and declutter further.

Today's challenge is your spice cabinet! It should take about 10 minutes to go through and check expiration dates and to consider if you only used a spice for a single recipe a long time ago. Then, if you want to kick it up a notch, take on your whole pantry.

I had just done my spices not that long ago, so actually I didn't have any to get rid of today. But, I did straighten them up and check my inventory. But, I did get rid of several things in the rest of the pantry. Mostly food trash, but I also added some Torani syrup pumps and bees wax wraps I didn't use to my donate box.

I have this organizer for our spices and it works really well if you have the space for it!

Declutter Challenge Day 2 - Spices & Pantry

Friday, February 2, 2024

Welcome to day one of the Declutter Challenge! I shared the schedule here. Each day has a 10 minute task, and an option to kick it up a notch and declutter further.

Today, we are tackling our purses and bags. In the 10 minute version, just clean out your purse and wallet. To kick it up a notch, go through all your bags. Consider your work bags, tote bags, backpacks, laptop bags...

And, to go even further, purge your entire bag collection.

I ended up mostly just purging trash (like candy wrappers), but I was able to discard a few things and use up some others. Are you still carrying around your Covid vaccine card? I'm not sure what to do with mine, but I don't really think I need to keep it in my wallet anymore.

And, then I took a pass at my entire bag collection. As far as purses go, I have 4. One wristlet, a crossbody bag, my all time favorite everyday handbag, and a small backpack. I rotate between these bags depending on my need for the day or week and this is working well. I also purged things from my work/laptop bag, and went through my tote collection. I decided on keeping one canvas tote. This is also a great time to check your reusable grocery bags.

Declutter Challenge Day 1 - Purses

Thursday, February 1, 2024

In the month of February I'm hosting a Decluttering Challenge! Every day has a space assigned to declutter. Each task should take about 10 minutes, depending on how much stuff you have. But, if you want to kick it up a notch, I've created a more thorough list that compliments the easier task.

There are also several flex days built in, meant to be a day you can use to catch up or tackle a specific area in your home that's not on the list.

I'm planning to document my own decluttering journey here on the blog, so if you want to participate please follow along!

Tips and Reminders:

> This is a decluttering challenge, not an organizing one. So, while some organization is likely to happen - you should not worry about buying bins or baskets until the challenge is over. Who knows, maybe you'll empty a container in another room and you can use that instead of buying something new.

> If one of the categories does suit your needs, make it fit! For example, if you don't use a purse - empty out your backpack, work bag, luggage, or even those reusable shopping bags.

>  I suggest saving an Amazon box this month that you can use to collect your donations during the month.

February Declutter Challenge

Tuesday, January 16, 2024

We popped over to Gainesville last weekend to check out the new Celebration Pointe shopping center. Even though not much is open yet, we really loved walking around! There are a lot of places to sit and hang out, which I think is a great shift in what 'malls' are turning in to.

The real reason this was our destination is because we had plans to see Solo! There is absolutely nothing like a brand new movie theater. I am SO thrilled that theaters let you reserve seats now. The fact that you can show up right on time and know exactly where to sit is great! This theater not only had those comfy reclining seats, but also a tray table for your snacks! I'm easy to please, what can I say?

This outfit is something you will see me in all summer! Thank you to my sister in law who gifted to me this cute bag and sunglasses. Both pieces I don't think I would have ever picked out for myself!

I mentioned earlier this year that I didn't plan on buying any new clothes in 2018.. A lofty goal indeed! I'm about 6 months in, so I wanted to do a little update. Have I succeeded? Yes and No....

I went a solid 4 months without a single purchase. That was incredibly beneficial. I really got to see what pieces are MVPs in my closet, and I was able to tell really quickly what I still didn't gravitate towards. It made me more creative with outfits, and I made a big effort to wear everything in my closet. In fact, by the beginning of May, I had 2 trashbags full of clothing to either donate or sell. My personal style became even more clear with this project.

In that post, I mentioned that I already knew I was going to need to replace a few items in my closet this year. So, I was sorta setting myself up for failure! Mainly I knew I was going to be replacing 2 of my favorite skirts. I got 100% of my money's worth out of those skirts and they were looking terrible! I was able to find the PERFECT replacement for them, and I hope to share an outfit post with that skirt soon.

Additionally, some things have come up this year that required some purchases:

Florida weather being as unpredictable as it is, I found a gap in my spring wardrobe. Meaning we actually had a bit of spring! Usually we get a month or two of winter and then it's back up in the 80s. I really needed some kind of transitional sweater/top that wouldn't be as thick as my winter clothing but still appropriate for the chill. I was able to find 2 crewneck sweaters from Old Navy that are may be the cutest things I've ever owned. I only got to wear them a few times and then the temperature went up! I can't wait to wear them again!

Also, as I think I've mentioned before, Blake and I started doing some volunteer construction work that requires long pants but not jeans. That was something I did not have at all! I picked up 3 pairs of work pants from Old Navy (they've been killing it this year!). These pants have been great, and I can wear them to work as well.

The first impulse buy was this dress from Target. I had an event to go to, and I reallyyy wasn't feeling any of the dresses I had. So, when I saw this dress I really buckled. It was under $30 and I have never gotten more compliments on a dress before. I did take off that hideous belt and add my own.

Which brings me to this post! The top I'm wearing is another new item. In the same shipment, I bought another skirt and plain off-white top to go with it. (Have I talked about how much I love and wear skirts?) The skirt and top were an intentional purchase, and the top I'm wearing here was an afterthought. A moment of weakness! I was compelled to buy it because it is SO me.

All in all, a hand full of new clothes in 6 months isn't a failure to me. I really would like to go the rest of the year without buying anything at all, but I'm not sure if that is going to happen. As I've learned, things come up and that's totally okay.

I'm sure I will feel more strongly by the end of the year, but I know this was a great project to take on! Challenging yourself from time to time is so important. Auditing yourself and your habits is a key to growth. My spending habits have become really clear to me, and I can already tell what triggers me to want to shop. Hopefully I can use that knowledge to continue this goal for the rest of the year!

Leave a comment below if you love the fact that you can reserve seats at movie theaters now! How are you doing with your goals? Did you think I could go a whole year without buying anything? Even I knew I couldn't!

Celebration Pointe & Spending Freeze Update

Monday, June 4, 2018

I basically have two experiences when I'm in my closet deciding what to wear. Sometimes, I hate everything in there and can't choose so I just go with an 'old faithful' outfit. And other times, I'm flipping through the hangers and I find something that I completely forgot I had.

Both of these problems boil down to, what I think, is having too many clothes. Last year, when I ruthlessly decluttered our home, I sort of skipped the closet. I did go through my clothes, but I really only got rid of a few things. Holey socks are easy to toss! Other items were easily justified. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure I need to assess my clothing collection. For real this time.

Personal Challenge: Not buying any new clothing in 2018

First step, Inventory.
It's really important to me that I know what I have. No more finding random pieces that I forgot about. I want to know exactly how many dresses, skirts, tops and pants I have. I'm already eyeing the bin of scarves I have accumulated. I live in Florida...I don't need 8 scarves.

I'm not going to declutter yet.
There are a few reasons why I think I need to hold off for a few weeks before I really start getting rid of things. Mainly because, every spring and fall I rotate out my clothes. A lot of things I can wear year round, but I do like to put the other season's items in bins, and then the following season I rotate the items. Basically I don't want to see sweaters when it's 90 degrees, so I swap those for the bathing suits I had put away. >>All this to say, soon I will have to do my seasonal swap out anyway! Florida weather is super unpredictable but I'd say by March I'll be looking for my shorts. So, I don't really want to go through everything twice.

If I'm forced to repeat clothing more often, I think it will become really apparent what I'm still not reaching for, and then I can get rid of that item. But, that will take some time to figure out.

Other reason being:
Workout motivation.
I have a small bin of clothes that are too snug on me right now. If I keep up my workout routine I will soon be able to fit into those things more comfortably and it will be like going shopping! Plus, I think in general if you are comfortable in your body, you feel more confident in clothing. Which might be why some of the clothes hanging in my closet don't appeal as much as they could.

Benefits.
So, obviously you don't make changes if the benefits aren't worth it. I really hope that this experiment will do several things for me:

Budget: Behind eating out, I think that buying unnecessary clothing is my main spending pitfall. While hardly ever do I pay full price for an item, it all adds up.

Appreciation: It's kinda weird to say, but I think that our clothing doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. In times past, people only had one dress that they mended until it fell apart completely. We live in a world that buys clothing at incredibly cheap prices that are meant to only be worn twice before coming apart at the seams. I want to appreciate what I have, which is a lot! Also, I want to get my money's worth out of the things I buy.

Creativity: When forced, I think that this will make me try harder to create new looks with items that I've had for years. Off the top of my head I have 2 or 3 go-to outfits that are fail safes. These are looks that I'm comfortable in, they always get compliments and I feel like they are exactly my style. My goal is to come up with a couple more of these 'old faithful' outfits, as I like to call them.

Blogging: So, occasionally I share outfits here on the blog. I love doing those posts, but I will admit that I always feel like I need to have new clothes to link to. I find it challenging that I only have 3 purses but I feel like you will get sick of seeing them over and over again. (Hence, why I'm using something that goes inside my purse in this post) But, I hate that! I am a real person, who probably should only own 1 purse! I don't want to share anything inauthentic to my real life. My hope is that this goal will challenge me to showcase more realistic outfits. Besides, that's what I love seeing on other blogs. (This was one of my favorite projects I've ever done, and I'd love to do more of that.)

Strategy.
I've been thinking a lot about how this is actually going to work. When I do my inventory, I'm sure I will find that I have all the bases covered. I really do have several dresses to wear to special occasions, most of which I've only worn once. There are tons of different variations of clothing I can wear to work, and I usually wear the same few things when lounging around the house.

The thought has struck me that there is probably going to be some point in the year when I am going to need something. For example, I have a trusty khaki skirt that I wear the heck out of, probably at least once a week. It's already worn out, to be honest. So if I stumble across one that could replace it, I really don't see the need to refrain from that.

So, my idea is that if I need something, I will not feel guilty buying it. A need is a need. But, I'd really like to attempt to only buy those needs used. Ebay, Poshmark, or consignment are all good options. (I do buy used clothing most of the time anyway!) The strategy here being that I need to work on deciphering a true need versus just a want.

I'm confident.
For one, I've succeeded in challenges before. The thing is, other than building up my self control, I really don't think this will be all that hard! When I started thinking about doing this, I realized that it had already been several weeks since I had purchased anything. (My money is currently going to a baby shower right now, haha.)

About the time I realized that, I thought about going to get some new workout clothes. After I didn't find anything, I decided I was okay with it because I really do have plenty of things to wear and I work out in my living room so it's not like it has to be cute. That same day my friend texted me and asked if I was interested in a pair of VS workout pants that she had never worn. Talk about perfect timing! And let me tell you, these are the best pants I've ever put on my body. Way better than what I expected to buy that day. Basically, I think everything always works out and I'm definitely not expecting to feel like I'm doing without at any point this year.

365 days is a long time! I'm a bit nervous, but mostly just excited to see what impact this has on my budget and mentality! So, what do you guys think!? Leave a comment below if you think I can do it! Do you ever feel like you have nothing to wear while staring at a full closet? What do you think about new versus used clothing?

I've decided not to buy any new clothes this year.
