1 Chronicles 4:10
"Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying: 'O that you would bless me and enlarge my territory and let your hand be with me and preserve me from calamity, so that it may bring no harm to me!' So God brought about what he asked for."

At first glance Jabez's prayer at 1 Chronicles 4:10 might seem a bit selfish because he asked for more land and to be preserved from calamity. But, his prayer was answered, so it couldn't have been selfish. He may have wanted more land so that his territory could hold more worshippers of Jehovah, and when asking to be shielded from calamity he may have meant just that it wouldn't overwhelm him. He is a good example for us and our prayers.

2 Kings 23:32
"He began to do what was bad in Jehovah's eyes, according to all that his forefathers had done."

2 Kings 23:32 tells us that despite Josiah's' good example, his son Jehoahaz began to do what was bad when he became king. Although parents have a big effect on their child's spirituality, we all have to make a stand for Jehovah personally. We cannot rely on our parent's faithful record of service.

2 Kings 22:19, 20
"Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before Jehovah on hearing what I have spoken against this place...your eyes will not see all the calamity that I will bring on this place."

Josiah was blessed at 2 Kings 22:19, 20 because he was humble. They had found the Book of the Law and Josiah's heart responded to the changes that needed to be made humbly. Humility is a vital  for us because it makes us teachable and it also helps us to accept counsel and correction.

2 Kings 16:19
"As for the rest of the history of Ahaz, what he did, is it not written in the book of the history of the times of the kings of Judah?"

Jeremiah mentions another book at 2 Kings 16:19 called the Book of the History of the Times of the Kings of Judah. This book was probably just a historical book written around the same time. Bible writers often refer to other books that were not inspired to be included in the Bible. So, while we may never know the full history of Ahaz, we can be confident that what Jehovah did include in His word is complete, in that it's got everything we need to know.

2 Kings 11:2, 3
"However Jehosheba the daughter of King Jehoram, Ahaziah's sister, took Jehoash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were to be put to death keeping him and his nurse in an inner bedroom. They managed to keep him concealed from Athaliah so he was not put to death. He remained with her for six years, hidden at the house of Jehovah, while Athaliah was ruling over the land." 

I was struck by the bravery of Princess Jehosheba at 2 Kings 11:2 when she risked her own life by saving her nephew from being murdered. She dangerously kept him hidden for 6 years and raised him to be a good king. By saving his life she was able to preserve the family line that would lead to the Messiah. I hope that I can imitate Jehosheba's example in being a good influence on my niece and nephews and that I could also be brave enough to stand up for Jehovah when I need to.

2 Kings 5:20
"Gehazi the attendant of Elisha the man of the true God said to himself: 'Here my master has spared this Syrian Naaman by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as Jehovah is living, I will run after him and take something from him.'" 

We know that Gehazi's greed and covetousness were wrong, but at 2 Kings 5:20 we see how he reasoned with and convinced himself that it was only right to ask for this payment. This account highlights the danger of rationalizing, minimizing or making excuses. Our actions should fit in line with Jehovah's thinking, not our personal thinking that we have bent to fit our needs.

2 Kings 2:2
Elijah said to Elisha: "Stay here, please, because Jehovah has sent me on to Bethel." But Elisha said: "As surely as Jehovah is living and as you are living, I will not leave you." 

Elisha is a great example of displaying Loyal Love at 2 Kings 2:2. He was determined to stick by his friend Elijah. He refused to abandon him even when given the opportunity. Loyal love is the kind of love that holds on and doesn't let go. While love and loyalty are both important qualities in a friendship, Loyal Love is different in that it will move us to act in behalf of our friends-like Elisha was moved to stick with Elijah.

1 Kings 21:25
"Indeed, there has never been anyone like Ahab, who was so determined to do what was bad in the eyes of Jehovah, egged on by his wife Jezebel."

Ahab had earned the bad reputation mentioned at 1 Kings 21:25 mostly because he was influenced by his wife Jezebel. This account shows how big of an effect wives can have on their husbands. We can manipulate, nag or be combative like Jezebel, or instead we can build up our families by being supportive and by encouraging our husbands to do good things.

1 Kings 19:4
"He went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree, and he asked that he might die. He said: "It is enough! O Jehovah take my life away, for I am no better than my forefathers." 

Elijah, at 1 Kings 19:4, had been traveling in the wilderness all day alone with his thoughts and he started feeling like a failure. The problem was he was judging himself on his own standards, not God's standards. Sometimes when we are alone we can start thinking of all of the things we've done wrong. But a negative viewpoint can be deceptive. We've probably done more right than we realize. It's Jehovah's opinion that really matters, and he values our faithfulness not our accomplishments.

1 Kings 15:13
"He even removed Maacah his grandmother from her position as queen mother, because she had made an obscene idol for pure worship of the sacred pole. Asa cut down her obscene idol and burned it.."

At 1 Kings 15:13 Asa was removing all of the false worship in the nation, even removing his own grandmother from her position because of her involvement with the idols.  We can imagine how hard that decision was for Asa. He probably loved his grandmother, but knew that he need to take a stand against her actions. It took a lot of courage, but he was blessed for his stand. We can remember his example next time we face the pressure to be loyal to our family over being loyal to Jehovah.

1 Kings 12:8
"..he rejected the advice that the older men gave him, and he consulted with the young men who had grown up with him..."

At 1 Kings 12:8 the king chose to ignore the advice he had been given by the older men and chose to listen to his peers. While it may be easier to get advice from a friend our own age, there are a lot of benefits to talking with older ones about a decision we are trying to make. Older ones can be a valuable resource of knowledge that can save us a lot of trouble.  They may be able to offer practical advice from their own experience; experience that our peer's haven't had yet.

1 Kings 9:4
"And you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, with integrity of heart and with uprightness by doing everything I have commanded you, and you obey my regulations and my judgements.."

Although David made a lot of big mistakes it was said in 1 Kings 9:4 that he had walked with integrity of heart. Overall he did live faithfully and when he made a mistake he corrected it. Our integrity also really matters to Jehovah, and although we are imperfect we can remain in his favor. We can strengthen our integrity by deepening our faith and trust in Jehovah, and by correcting our mistakes.

1 Kings 3:9
"So grant your servant an obedient heart to judge you people, to discern between good and bad..."

Like Solomon did at 1 Kings 3:9, it would be completely appropriate to ask Jehovah for an obedient heart. We can develop that obedient heart by reading the Bible and applying what we learn. A heart that is obedient is a protection, it gives us peace of mind and will help us to maintain a good relationship with Jehovah.

1 Kings 1:11-12
"Nathan then said to Bathsheba Solomon's mother: 'Have you not heard Adonijah...has become king, and our lord David does not know anything about it? So now come, please, and let me advise you, so that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon."

Nathan knew that Solomon was supposed to be king, but when he found out Adonijah was trying to steal the kingship he acted with tact and loyalty when he spoke to Bathsheba at 1 Kings 1:11, 12. We can try to be loyal like Nathan by upholding Jehovah's arrangements and standing up for the right thing.

2 Samuel 22:26
"With someone loyal you act in loyalty..."

David experienced disloyalty a lot, even his own son betrayed him. So we can see how important Jehovah's loyalty must have been to to him in chapter 22:26. In the same way, no matter how many humans let us down we can be confident that Jehovah will be there for us as long as we are loyal to him.

2 Samuel 21:15, 17
"Once again there was war between the Philistines and Israel. So David and his servants went down and fought the Philistines, but David became exhausted...At once Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and struck the Philistine down..."

We can imagine how grateful David must have been in 2 Samuel 21: 15-17 when Abishai came to his aid when he was almost killed by a Philistine. In our lives we may have 'giant' obstacles. Sometimes it will be easy to face those challenges, and sometimes we will need some help. We should gladly accept that help and also be aware of what others are going through so that we can help them.

2 Samuel 16: 3, 4
"The king now said: 'And where is the son of your master?' At this Ziba said to the king: 'He is staying in Jerusalem, for he said, 'Today the house of Israel will give back the royal rule of my father to me.' The king then said to Ziba: Look! Everything that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours..."
 
At 2 Samuel 16: 3, 4 we can see how harmful slander can be. The servant lied to King David and told him that Mephibosheth was going to try to get the kingship for himself. Not only was it a complete lie, but the servant got rewarded for it. Although we can't help what other people say about us, we can live in a way that would make those lies hard to believe. And, we can make the effort to stop gossip about others when we hear it.

2 Samuel 14:25
"Now in all Israel, no man was as highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head, there was no flaw in him." 

From 2 Samuel 14:25 it is obvious that Absalom was a very attractive man, but we can see later that his beauty did not compensate for his arrogance and disloyalty. The world we live in is very focused on looks and appearance, but Absalom teaches us that looks are not valuable when you do not have inner beauty.

2 Samuel 12:23
"Now that he has died, why should I fast? Can I bring him back? I will go to him, but he will not return to me."

David showed a very balanced viewpoint of mourning in 2 Samuel chapter 12:23 when his newborn son had died. He was naturally upset by this death, but he knew there was nothing he could do about it. When we lose people in death, it is completely natural to grieve. But this account reminds us that we should not be overcome by grief, but rather remember even though we can't do anything about their death, Jehovah can.

2 Samuel 6:7
"At that Jehovah's anger blazed against Uzzah and the true God struck him down there for his irreverent act, and he died there beside the Ark of the true God." 

Some may ask why Jehovah reacted so strongly to the actions of Uzzah mentioned at 2 Samuel 6:7 if Uzzah was only trying to save the Ark. We need to remember that Jehovah can read hearts. The verse says that Uzzah acted irreverently or disrespectfully. Being a Levite he knew that only authorized people could touch the Ark. So when he acted it was presumptuous and Jehovah could see his bad motives.
