3 Annoying Things About Pugs

Monday, March 6, 2017

You don't need to look very hard on this website to figure out my adoration for the Pug breed. We have had such a good experience having pugs. Up until last year, all my pug advice came from owning just one pug. Now that we have 3, it's cool to see what's personality and what is a "pug-thing".

They've got so many lovely qualities, but along with that they've got some annoying ones too. Most pug people agree these are easy to look over, and actually find them endearing. But, if you are considering Pug-ownership, there are things you need to know!

The Shedding!
The dog hair and pet dander in my house is insane. Pugs are shedders. If you have allergies, pugs are not for you. As you give them scratchies you can see the hair float away in a cloud surrounding your pet. It's actually incredible. We've got both a black pug and 2 fawn pugs. Interestingly the fawn pugs seem to shed more than Delly. When we just had Delly, her hairs didn't show up on our dark furniture and blankets, but you could see it all over the floor. Bailey & Winston's hair shows up all over our leather furniture, but you can't see it on our floors. It's there though!

There are things you can do to keep the dog hair situation under control. We have a great deshedding brush that helps a lot. If you brushed daily or even every other day, I'm sure you'd see a huge difference in the amount of hair that ends up elsewhere. I've also made it a habit to sweep every day. That may be over kill, but I'm very particular about our home. Swiffer dusters are also great!

The Noises!
I always compare owning a pug to living near a train track. The people who live there get so used to the train noises, they don't even hear it anymore. That's exactally what it's like for us! Our guests always giggle when one of the pugs start snoring, and then we laugh because we didn't even notice.

It's in their nature and breeding. They don't have great noses and that smooshed face makes for lots of various noises. Snoring, grunting, sneezing...even their nails click on the hard floors. You'll get used to it and even find it charming.

The Stubbornness!
Pugs are quite intelligent, and catch on really quickly. When we adopted Bailey last summer, she learned to sit for a treat after coming in from potty breaks within 1 day. She is 7 or 8 years old, and we don't think she knew any tricks before coming to us. Being food motivated helps, but we've had no trouble teaching this 'old' dog new tricks. That being said, if they don't want to do something, they won't.

For example, if it's raining...no, if it's even misting outside, our pugs refuse to go out to pee. Like, dig their paws into the floor, flat out refuse! It can be very frustrating! I can't help but smile when our pugs 'play dumb'. They look at you with those big ole eyes and act like they don't know what planet you're from. Because our pugs love their treats so much, usually just offering one will help us come to a compromise. (or in the raining situation, following them around the yard holding an umbrella over them...) If you really want them to do something, you have to be determined to be more stubborn than them.

Overall, any animal is going to come with a few annoying traits. If you are considering getting a pug, you should definitely be aware of all their facets. Our pugs bring my husband and I endless joy and they have so much character. (For what it's worth, I think 3 is too many! 2 is the perfect number of pugs. We are crazy about all 3 of our dogs, but 3 is a lot of pug.)

Comment below if you are a pug lover! I'd love to hear what you find annoying about your pet, pug or not. Don't forget to mention what you love about them too!

  2. Total pug lover! Totally agree with the stubbornness aspect. Cooper is definitely in that stage of life that he's learning his level of stubbornness lol.

  3. I am already a puglover since I met my sisters pugs 12 years ago. I had three pugs like you, one black named Happy (after one of Snowwhites dwarfs) and two fawn: mammapug SarahFay (12,5 year) and her daughter Natalie (10 year). Happy died last year in february at the age of 15. She was a quiet lady who most of the time was ignored by the other two ladies. As she grew older now and then the other two did not like her to be around and started fighting with her. Then I had to remind them that Happy had a right to be in the house just like they had. She was the one who did not mind going walking in the rain. SarahFay is like your pugs. She really hates rain and all kind of water. Taking her to get a bath is a crime. Natalie does not like rain too, but her I can trick to go outside when I go with her.
SarahFay and Natalie are fine together. The only time they fight together it is about something to eat. SarahFay is a slow eater. Natalie eats twice as quick. So I have to sit between them when they eat. SarahFay barks during eating to scare Natalie away. And I take care she stays away, so SarahFay can eat her food.
I think it is normal that black pugs have thinner hair than the fawn pugs. At least that is what I learned from our Dutch pugsfriendssociety Commedia. Happy lost less hair than SarahFay and Natalie do.
Snorring and making pig noises they do all the time when they are sleeping. Sneezing does SarahFay when we walk outside near and on the grassfields.
Natalie was born together with 3 brothers. After one of her brothers died at 4 weeks Natalie decided she wanted to sit on my lap to be comforted. When she is afraid (hard noises, thunder, strange people and so on) she Always comes to me and I have to pick het up and sit with her until what scares her is gone. She can sit for hours on my lap if I let her. She has a bad day if she did not have the chance to sit at least 5 minutes a day on my lap. There are of course days when I don't have so much time because I have to work on my computer or in the house. Then she comes to me, looks at me and if I don't pay attention she starts barking and trying to climb on my legs. She does not stop till I lift her up and let her sit on my lap.
I think having two pugs is fine. You can pay enough attention to both. And two pugs have each other when you have to leave the house to go shopping or working.
It is lots of fun having them around. My sister had three pugs, one male and two female. She had a few times puppies from which I had earlier Lucyl, the fawn daughter of black Happy and fawn pappa Lucky and Eduard, the oldest son of SarahFay and pappa Lucky. After Lucyls death of cancer at the age of 2 years and 9 month, I got Natalie, the youngest daughter of SarahFay and pappa Lucky. Eduard died when he was 7 years and 9 1/2 month old. He had a belly filled with water. At the moment my sister died I had only Natalie and I cared for Happy, Lucky and SarahFay since my sister was in hospital. Lucky died shortly after my sister when he was 11. So I got her three pugs. I had four pugs during 20 days. After Lucky's death I had three pugs for 1 year and 8 1/2 months. All that time Happy was already old and did not walk long. Her last year I put her in a doggycar on the way to the grassfields in my neighbourhood. The way back home she walked till the last 4 months of her life. Then she just walked a little bit on the grass. She loved taking sunbathes sitting on the grass.
I agree with you that having 2 pugs is perfect. Walking with two pugs is fine. With 3 is difficult, with 4 is almost impossible.

    1. Oh, wow! Evangeline, you are the pug expert! It sounds like our pugs have a lot in common. Walking 3 dogs at the same time is really hard. I usually only take 2, if my husband can't come with me to help. Bailey will gladly stay behind so she can get a break from Winston. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your stories!
